Week 14 Injury Report (2020 Fantasy Football)

Week 14 Injury Report (2020 Fantasy Football)

The 2020 injury report has been upgraded to include some new features. In addition to covering all of the fantasy-relevant injuries, I will update you on the previous weeks’ injuries. Also, I’ll explain the nature of the injury (if known), provide information on the expected length of each player’s absence, and offer an assessment of the impact on the injured player’s teammates.

With that, I welcome you to the revamped injury report. Football is a violent game, and, unfortunately, players are going to miss time due to injuries. I promise you I don’t want to be here just as much as you don’t, but this is a necessary evil in this game that we love. As always, I hope this list is as short as possible.

New Injuries

DeVante Parker (WR – MIA) and Mike Gesicki (TE – MIA)
A first-half leg injury ended DeVante Parker’s day early. Without Parker, Tua Tagovailoa was reliant on Mike Gesicki, but he went down in the second half with a shoulder injury. The Dolphins have been without Preston Williams for weeks. It’s a completely decimated receiving corps. If Parker and Gesicki can’t go, this is just a team to avoid entirely for fantasy.

Fantasy Value Impact: Tua Tagovailoa⬇️

Deebo Samuel (WR – SF)
Early in the first quarter, Deebo Samuel strained his hamstring and was unable to return. Brandon Aiyuk will operate as the WR1 for as long as Samuel is out. Given that this is not the first time Samuel has strained a hamstring, it seems extremely likely this is a season-ender. When the coach says it doesn’t look good, you know it’s not good. Samuel is not going to play next week and we likely won’t see him until 2021.

Fantasy Value Impact: Brandon Aiyuk ⬆️ ⬆️

Alex Smith (QB – WAS)
Whenever you hear the words “leg injury” and “Alex Smith” in the same sentence, you get scared. The good news is Smith’s leg injury did not look overly serious. The bad news is given his history, it appeared the Football Team erred on the side of caution and rolled with Dwayne Haskins the rest of the way. To be honest, I’m not sure why they didn’t use Logan Thomas as there’s no doubt in my mind he’s a better quarterback than Haskins. If Smith cannot start next week, it’s a significant blow to all things Football Team because Haskins is so bad at football that he doesn’t even belong on an XFL roster.

Fantasy Value Impact: All Football Teamers ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Matthew Stafford (QB – DET)
On a late-game scramble, Matthew Stafford got crunched on his way down and was holding his ribs a bit. He stayed in the game for a little while longer but eventually was pulled for Chase Daniel. My early guess is Stafford plays next week, but rib injuries are tricky, as Drew Brees has shown us. It goes without saying but if Stafford isn’t starting, it’s a complete disaster for all Lions.

Injury Updates

Brandin Cooks (WR – HOU)
The Texans’ WR1 was close to playing on Sunday, but given his history of concussions, was held out. Expect Brandin Cooks to return in Week 15.

Estimated Return Time: This week
Course of Action: Return to lineups

D.J. Moore (WR – CAR)
It is unclear whether D.J. Moore’s ankle injury would have kept him out of last week’s contest as he tested positive for Covid and was away from the team. Given that Moore himself was the positive test, he is no lock to return in Week 15, either from his ankle injury or Covid infection.

Estimated Return Time: 1-2 weeks
Course of Action: Hold

Kenny Golladay (WR – DET)
The Lions’ WR1 is still out with a hip injury and has not appeared close to returning. At this point, there’s little reason to expect him back this season. Marvin Jones will continue operating as the primary receiver, while T.J. Hockenson will be Matthew Stafford’s primary target.

Estimated Return Time: 2021
Course of Action: Drop if you need the spot

Julio Jones (WR – ATL)
It seems like every other week, Julio Jones is sitting out with a soft tissue issue. The Falcons just dropped a game to the Chargers. There are three games left and they have no reason to push Julio to return. He may play next week. He may get shut down for the season. If you made it to Week 15 with Julio and he’s active, you play him.

Estimated Return Time: Anywhere from this week to 2021
Course of Action: Hold
