K.H. Lee delivered a nearly perfect four-day outing at AT&T Byron Nelson last weekend, finishing a ridiculous -25 and delivering a -6 performance on Sunday to wrap up a marginal victory over Sam Burns (-22) while in Texas. Lee entered Byron Nelson as an extreme long-shot to win at +15000. A strong first two days catapulted the South Korean into a comfortable lead, where he remained close to flawless down the stretch, acquiring just three bogeys during the entire tournament.

Charl Schwartzel was one of my favorites to contend down the stretch, and he delivered a good outing as well, finishing T3 (-21) and helping produce valuable points in DFS lineups throughout this past weekend. Some of my other favorites heading into Byron Nelson couldn’t maintain a dominant performance throughout the weekend, faltering in the mid-rounds or experiencing a Sunday collapse, such as Ryan Palmer (T47) who finished with +3 that slid him out of a top-25 finish, losing valuable points in DFS lineups.

The PGA Tour springs into action with the PGA Championship in a new location this year, heading back to the East Coast on the warm and sandy beaches of The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort. In 2020, Collin Morikawa was treated to the opposite coast, finishing -13 to win at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco. Golfers will need to bring their drivers on the longest course in the entire history of championship majors.

Course Preview

The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island on the shores of the Atlantic in South Carolina provides a scenic backdrop for players and viewers alike. It’s a par 72 but has been extended 200 yards further than when it last hosted the PGA Championship in 2012. With a 7,876 yard course to traverse, golfers will need to utilize a mixture of long drives and finesse swings when approaching the elevated greens.

Bermuda grass comprises the shorter roughs at Kiawah, with the greens featuring paspalum grass. These greens could force players to put more strength behind their putts, resulting in devastating overestimations that get funneled into the run-off surrounding many of the greens on the course. Run-offs and wind are just some of the constant hazards present at the 2021 PGA Championship.

Bryson DeChambeau ($10,200)
It seems like The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort was designed specifically for Bryson DeChambeau. The 27-year old Californian ranks first in driving distance, averaging 322 yards per attempt on Tour this season. He also is first in the FedExCup rankings, in large part due to leading all golfers in strokes gained off-the-tee and off-the-green. Getting DeChambeau into your DFS lineups is a top priority, and the salary could be higher, as he is coming off of a T55 finish at AT&T Byron Nelson this past weekend. Don’t let recency bias or the high salary turn you away from rostering what could be the winner of the 2021 PGA Championship.

Webb Simpson ($10,500)
Webb Simpson has had a full month off to prepare for Kiawah Island and enters with momentum, notching two top-15 finishes under his belt in his last two tournament appearances at The Masters (T12/-2) and RBC Heritage (T9/-11). There are plenty of juicy stats to eye up to justify rostering the 35-year old North Carolina native, but perhaps the best one for Kiawah is his 70.05 GIR% that ranks 15th among all golfers on Tour this season. He also boasts the fifth-highest scoring average (69.844) and averages 4.35 birdies per round, meaning Simpson is very good at avoiding bogeys. Since birdies are the most coveted DFS stat, Simpson is a slam-dunk in your lineups based on his potential to provide a smorgasbord of points between a top-25 finish and a plethora of birdies.

Daniel Berger ($10,300)
A golfer with great value can be found in 28-year old Daniel Berger. The Florida native is 10th in total strokes gained throughout the 2020-21 PGA Tour season, including a 70.95 GIR% that also ranks 10 amongst all golfers on Tour. Berger is a beast at scoring birdies, averaging 4.65 per round to sit third atop the leaderboards. After missing the cut at The Masters, Berger has rattled off consecutive -10 and -21 outings at RBC Heritage and AT&T Byron Nelson last weekend. You can roster Berger in your lineups without having to sacrifice a maximum salary, which balances out the more expensive elite options like Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas.

Marc Leishman ($9,500)
A 16-year pro out of Australia, Marc Leishman has had a great 2020-21 PGA Tour season. His strokes gained statistics aren’t the best, as his highest rank is 50th in strokes gained approaching the green (.328) while he is -.269 and -.137 in strokes gained off-the-tee and around-the-green. What Leishman does offer to DFS lineups is his 67.25 GIR%, meaning he will have plenty of opportunities to score a few birdies and produce down the stretch at a reduced salary. He did miss consecutive cuts at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship back in March, but his recent hot streak combined with a top-30 finish during the 2012 PGA Championship at Kiawah should not be overlooked.
