Multi-User Mock Draft Recap: Half-PPR (2021 Fantasy Football)

Multi-User Mock Draft Recap: Half-PPR (2021 Fantasy Football)

Last Friday, I joined some FantasyPros followers to conduct a 12-team, half-PPR mock draft using our DraftWizard. While doing a mock on the DraftWizard is always useful, it was particularly fun to draft against other people.

Mixing in the human element is always helpful in a mock draft because it gives you a sense of where people are deviating from consensus rankings and average draft position. Unpredictability is part of what makes fantasy football so fun.

So, how did the draft turn out? Here’s my analysis of the first 10 rounds, plus the entire draft board and grades.

Note: I was randomly assigned the 2nd overall pick.

Round 1

My pick: Dalvin Cook (RB – MIN)
Cook was a no-brainer here with Christian McCaffrey off the board. If this was a superflex league, my decision likely would’ve been different. But when healthy, Cook is a stud.

Best pick:
Running backs obviously went early in Round 1, but I liked both ZachPerc’s and Hickster’s picks of Jonathan Taylor and Nick Chubb at picks eight and nine, respectively. Both can finish as top three tailbacks this season, and getting them in the back of Round 1 presents great potential value.

Biggest surprise:
Maybe this isn’t a surprise to you, but I was surprised to see Tyreek Hill be the first receiver drafted by Mr. Schmooze at 7th overall over Davante Adams, who went 10th overall. Clearly, the Aaron Rodgers situation is depressing Adams’ value a little bit.

Round 2

My pick: Justin Jefferson (WR – MIN)
I was pretty excited Jefferson got to me at the end of Round 2, as I think he was the last elite receiver available.

Best pick:
Trevorkos managed to land Aaron Jones as his RB1 at the top of Round 2, which I think is a strong value. I get it; Rodgers is potentially holding out. But until we know what’s happening with Rodgers, Jones is still one of my favorite tailbacks.

Biggest surprise:
Picking 13th overall, Robwelch200 clearly sought upside at running back. He drafted Cam Akers with the last pick of Round 1, then took Najee Harris at the start of Round 2. Harris could deliver, but at this lofty price, there’s really no room for error.

Round 3

My pick: J.K. Dobbins (RB – BAL)
Akers and Antonio Gibson are getting the most love among the year two tailbacks, but I’ll gladly wait and snag Dobbins in the third. Dobbins might be the most complete running back of the three, and I’m expecting a big second season even with Gus Edwards and Lamar Jackson potentially stealing TDs.

Best pick:
Not to toot my own horn, but I really liked my Dobbins pick. I also really liked Billy and the Krav’s selection of Keenan Allen one pick later. Allen’s a safe WR1.

Biggest surprise:
Philagape took Darren Waller before George Kittle in the middle of Round 3. Maybe those two are closer than I originally thought.

Round 4

My pick: D.J. Moore (WR – CAR)
I’ve been a huge fan of Moore and love him as a high-floor WR2. A spike in touchdowns could have him in the WR1 conversation.

Best pick:
A few really solid receivers went in this round. I took Moore, Billy, and the Krav took Cooper Kupp to pair with Allen, and K. Jared Wright landed Mike Evans as his WR2.

Biggest surprise:
Hickster took CeeDee Lamb before all of the guys I mentioned above. Lamb has plenty of upside, but I was surprised to see him go ahead of some more proven pass catchers.

Round 5

My pick: Javonte Williams (RB – DEN)
This may have been earlier than I would’ve liked for Williams, but I wanted to take an upside shot, and as my RB3, I don’t need Williams to produce immediately.

Best pick:
Texas_Boi_42 landed Josh Allen with the first pick of the round, which is a pretty good value considering Patrick Mahomes went at the end of Round 3.

Biggest surprise:
I was pretty stunned to see Chase Edmonds get taken by Mr. Schmooze in the middle of this round.

Round 6

My pick: Melvin Gordon III (RB – DEN)
I was pretty happy to follow Williams with Gordon and secure what could be a pretty productive backfield.

Best pick:
As a Courtland Sutton fan, I liked that ZachPerc took a shot on him in early Round 6.

Biggest surprise:
There were a few at the beginning of this round. Ja’Marr Chase was the first pick of Round 6, and he was followed by Brandon Aiyuk, Tee Higgins, and Kyle Pitts. All four of those guys present a ton of upside and risk.

Round 7

My pick: Justin Herbert (QB – LAC)
I kept wavering on whether to keep waiting on QB and almost missed this pick! But I’m a believer in Herbert and think he could be the fantasy MVP this season. With no really appealing options at running back, I decided to take the plunge and grab a QB I love.

Best pick:
Billy and the Krav deserve credit for grabbing my favorite tight end, Dallas Goedert, at the top of Round 7. No tight end was taken after Goedert until Round 10.

Biggest surprise:
At this point, the surprises aren’t as striking anymore. But I was a little surprised to see Leonard Fournette taken by Mr. Schmooze. The Tampa backfield is one I want nothing to do with.

Round 8

My pick: Laviska Shenault Jr. (WR – JAC)
Receiver is super deep, and there are plenty of upside shots to take later on in drafts. With just Jefferson and Moore on my roster, now was the time to start addressing my depth. I started with Shenault, who is a Deebo Samuel type of player and could be Trevor Lawrence’s favorite target.

Best pick:
My strategy for handling the Bengals wideouts is to take the last one on the board, which will likely be Tyler Boyd. That’s exactly what ZachPerc did, landing Boyd two rounds after Chase and Higgins were taken.

Biggest surprise:
Billy and the Krav took Gus Edwards at the end of this round, and New22 took David Johnson at the beginning of the round. Edwards could be a goal line vulture, but I wouldn’t touch Johnson.

Round 9

My pick: Michael Pittman Jr. (WR – IND)
Pittman might be my favorite upside flyer at receiver this year. I’ve been a believer in his talent as a pure possession receiver. The Colts’ receiving corps lacks a true No. 1 threat, and I’m expecting Carson Wentz to revitalize his career with Frank Reich.

Best pick:
I hate tooting my own horn, but I think I got the most exciting player in Pittman. I also liked Billy and the Krav’s selection of Ryan Tannehill in Round 9. That’s pretty solid value.

Biggest surprise:
I was surprised Jalen Hurts didn’t go earlier than the 9th round to Mr. Schmooze. I’m not touching Hurts, but this price was more appropriate.

Round 10

My pick: Marvin Jones Jr. (WR – JAC)
I didn’t intentionally draft two Jaguars receivers. However, I don’t hate it. The passing game could be pretty good with Lawrence under center. And Jones offers a vertical threat that complements what Shenault can do horizontally.

Best pick:
RobWelch200 took a good flyer on Jaylen Waddle at the top of Round 10. I also liked Andrew Hall’s selection of Marquise Brown, who’s coming at a huge discount compared to his ADP last year.

Final Draft Grade: 88/100 (B+)

I was happy to earn a B+ from the DraftWizard given how many high-risk, high-reward picks I made. I was projected to finish 5th in the league, but this was a really tight draft. Only 11 points separated 2nd and 7th. Congratulations to Texas_Boi_42, who was projected to have the best team.

Below is the post-draft rankings and the full draft board. Thanks to everyone who participated!
