Dalvin Cook Injury: Should Alexander Mattison be a Week 3 Waiver Wire Target? (2021 Fantasy Football)
Given the number of injuries Week 2 offered, it was easy to miss the fact that all-world running back Dalvin Cook sustained an ankle injury during the team’s heartbreaking loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Cook was able to finish the game, but the Vikings said the running back is dealing with a sprained ankle after the loss. How bad is the injury, and should Cook’s backup, Alexander Mattison, be considered a waiver wire add?
Dalvin Cook Injury Update
It was an absolute shootout between the Minnesota Vikings and the Arizona Cardinals in Week 2. The Vikings would miss a game-winning field goal as time expired, giving them an 0-2 start to the season. To make matters worse, Dalvin Cook exited in the second half with what Mike Zimmer described as an ankle sprain. Cook was able to play on Minnesota’s final drive of the game, but it will be worth monitoring how his ankle feels as practices occur throughout the week. With Cook having injury concerns throughout his career, it’s never good to see him pick up any injuries. We should get an update on Cook’s status ahead of a matchup with the Seattle Seahawks in Week 3.
Dalvin Cook injury impact on Alexander Mattison and other Week 3 waiver wire targets
Dalvin Cook’s long-time backup, Alexander Mattison, is not worth rostering when Cook is healthy outside of those handcuffing the top RB or stashing a lottery ticket. However, if Cook were to miss time with injury, Mattison would vault into the RB2 conversation, especially in a Week 3 matchup against the Seahawks. This is expected to be another shootout for the Vikings, and the Seahawks just gave up 200+ total yards to Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry.
While there is a lot of uncertainty around Dalvin Cook’s Week 3 status, Kyle Yates advises that managers should place a waiver wire bid on Mattison just in case this is a more significant injury to Cook that will cause him to miss time.
