Running Diary: Week 9 (2021 Fantasy Football)

(The Fantasy Football Running Diary is an ongoing series by Tim Metzler, in which Tim records and shares what is happening in the NFL every Sunday. It may also include updates on his personal life.)

Paying attention to everything that’s happening in the NFL is a challenge. You’re busy. Don’t sweat it. You keep doing you, and let me do the work for you. This Running Diary will recap as many events as I can keep track of on Sunday, November 7th. Let’s do this!

12:05 PM (CST) – KICKOFF! Happy Daylight Savings Time. Did you enjoy the extra sleep? I did.

12:09 – The improbable has happened. The first TD of the day comes from Daniel Jones (QB – NYG) to Evan Engram (TE – NYG). Thirty yards, and I’m genuinely shocked. Given Engram’s penchant for dropping everything and Jones’s penchant for not throwing TDs… this feels like a mirage.

12:12Denzel Ward INTERCEPTS Joe Burrow (QB – CIN) IN THE RED ZONE AND TAKES IT 97 YARDS FOR THE PICK-6!

12:20Derek Carr (QB – LV) hits Hunter Renfrow (WR – LV) for a short TD. This Giants vs. Raiders game is already more interesting than I thought it would be.

12:21 – OH SNAP! Kirk Cousins (QB – MIN) takes advantage of some confusion and hits Justin Jefferson (WR- MIN) for a SWEEEEET 50 yard TD.

12:24Joe Mixon (RB – CIN) extended his TD streak to 6 consecutive weeks with an 11-yard run into the good place.

12:42 – The Bengals can not stop Nick Chubb (RB – CLE). With King Henry out for potentially the rest of the season, Chubb is the best pure runner in the league.

12:58 – I am not sure what to make of the AFC North anymore. Donovan Peoples-Jones (WR – CLE) just took a 61-yard bomb to the house. The Browns lead the Bengals 21-7. The Ravens are down to the Vikings, and the Steelers are 4-3 but play tomorrow. This division could have no clear front-runner before week 10.

1:00 – Speaking of front-runners, the Cowboys are down 13-0 to the Broncos. THE BRONCOS. There is no chance the boys will lose control of the NFC LEAST division, but this is not a good look.

1:25 – Half-time is approaching for these noon games. Vikings lead the Ravens 17-3. Lamar Jackson (QB – BAL) has looked more inaccurate than I’ve ever seen him. The Bills and Jaguars find themselves inexplicably tied at 6-6. Color me baffled. The Bills seem like the best in the league one week and then bottom of the barrel. The Broncos lead the Cowboys 16-0, the Browns lead the Bengals 24-10, and the Falcons lead the Saints 10-0. This New Orleans team looks lost without Jameis Winston (QB – NO). Put in Taysom Hill (QB – NO), let’s go. The Patriots lead the Panthers 14-6. Yes, it’s a boring matchup. Christian McCaffrey (RB – CAR) is back, at least. He has six touches and is on a pitch count. The Raiders lead the Giants 13-10. Darren Waller (TE – LV) is disappointing again but has the most targets on his team. The Tua-less Dolphins lead the Texans in the lowliest matchup of the season. 7-6. Remember when it was fathomable that the Dolphins could fight for a Wild Card spot? The off-season is a wild time.

2:00 – SHEEEEESH. These games are getting wild. So many surprising scores. Most prominent is the 1st-and-goal Broncos, who are already up 19-0 over the Cowboys.

2:20 – It’s the end of the 3rd quarter, and the Bills and Jaguars are still 6-6. I could puke.

2:51 – I’m currently hanging with a Bills fan. He’s not doing well. Bills down 9-6 to the Jaguars; this game is a nightmare, not the fun Halloween kind either.

2:52 – The Cowboys FINALLY scored. 30-8, losing to the lowly Broncos.

3:15 – Good gracious. The Bills lost to the Jags. My word.

3:20Jordan Love (QB – GB) is in for Aaron Rodgers (QB – GB). As a Packers fan, I don’t want to talk about Rodgers. Here’s hoping Love delivers. I’m not optimistic.

3:35 – Love is 0 for 2. This start is not good. Chiefs are about to score.

3:38 – Mahomes to Kelce. Like poetry. Chiefs up 7-0.

4:00 – The Eagles and Chargers are tied 7-7. Chiefs over Packers 7-0. Kyler Murray (QB – ARI) is out today, but the Cardinals are up 7-0 over the 49ers. Rough year for San Fran. Arizona, however, is THE juggernaut. Especially given their lead while starting Colt McCoy (QB – ARI). 2010 called, it wants its journeyman QB back.

5:21 – What’s the best meal? Today I made a killer breakfast of onion and potato hash with garlic bacon and cheesy eggs. But that’s like… as good as breakfast gets. Lunch feels like the weakest of the meals, given its penchant for being rushed. Dinner has to be the winner, right? The options you have for dinner are endless. Yet, breakfast sets the tempo for the day. You have an excellent breakfast, and you don’t need to worry about the other two meals being perfect. It’s a tough call. I find myself torn between breakfast and dinner.

5:25 – The Aaron Rodgers era in Green Bay is in no danger of ending at the hands of Jordan Love. He looks lost. Like… he appears not to know he’s playing in a game. Can’t make adjustments, can’t make plays. They’re 0-for-6 on 3rd down. The Chiefs lucked out by dodging Rodgers. Play this game in three weeks, and the Packers win without breaking a sweat. No idea what’s up with this Chiefs team, but it’s not good. It’s to the point where we should all be asking if Patrick Mahomes (QB – KC) is a viable QB2 in Superflex leagues.

5:28 – Sweet marmalade on a buttery biscuit! James Conner (RB – ARI) has 3 TDs for the day, bringing his season total to 11 TDs. Leads the league. Wow. Just… wow.

5:47 – The Packers vs. Chiefs is sad. Sadder than a Logan Paul fight. Yes, Logan Paul fights are sad; you can’t convince me otherwise. Rigged and 100% certified hack-sauce. Stop supporting that con-man. Also, stop watching this game because it’s pathetic.

5:50 – Chargers vs. Eagles is coming down to the wire. 24-24, but the Chargers are burning the clock to set up a last-second field goal.

6:05 – Chargers win, but the Eagles played well. Good things coming for Philly? Probably not. But maybe?

6:20 – The Cardinals top the 49ers while Jordan Love throws his first career TD to Allen Lazard (WR – GB).

6:30 – That’s it! The Chiefs win this one, but uh… that was gross. I hated that game. The Packers’ defense looks top-tier, but the offense can’t function with Jordan Love.

7:25 – The late game has started. Time to see what the post-Derrick Henry (RB – TEN) Titans look like. Does anyone want to bet… not good? Yeah, me too.

7:48 – The Titans vs. Rams game is… fine. Cooper Kupp (WR – LAR) continues to see an otherworldly number of targets. Adrian Peterson is filling the Derrick Henry role, but not well. He’s got three carries for 7 yards as the first quarter ends.

8:05 – This game is tiring me out. My wife turned on Downton Abbey, and it’s more exciting. I’m more focused on this INCREDIBLE PBS show than this pathetic showcase of mild talent. Let’s hope things pick up in the second half.

8:44 – This second quarter has changed my mind. I apologize for getting caught in the intricacies of a delightful 1920s-set English drama. It’s a fantastic show, but the Titans are now up 21-3. Stafford threw a pick-6, and the Titans are looking to upset the Rams. As my dad likes to say, “Wowza.”

9:38 – My apologies. I fell asleep. My wife was up early to run a 9.2-mile race. She crushed. I’m tired due to not being productive.

9:39 – Titans are still on top of the Rams. 21-6. I think this game is proving that both these teams are formidable. Anyway, wake me up when the game ends. Yawn.

10:05Adrian Peterson (RB – TEN) is somehow still an effective running back. He drives in the dagger and scores a TD to put the Titans up 28-9. This game is over.

10:20 – Boooooo! The Rams score a garbage time TD for no reason other than to pad their stats. That’s a hack. That’s low. This loss is the second loss of the season for this Rams team, and the notion that they spent the last three minutes of a lost game trying to rack up some meaningless points with their starters is abhorrent irresponsible. Seriously, shame on Sean McVay. Take out your starters, and don’t risk injury. So stupid.

10:35 – The game has officially ended. Thanks for following me this week, and I hope you have the most delightful week possible. Stay safe, stay healthy, and I’ll catch you next Sunday.
