It’s Sunday. You know what that means. It’s time for another edition of category analysis.
Every week, we’ll look at players rostered in fewer than 60 percent of Yahoo fantasy leagues. We’ll focus on eight-category leagues because turnovers are a waste, to be honest. These players can help you in one of the respective categories before your league-mates catch on.

The eight categories we’ll focus on each week are:
- Points
- Rebounds
- Assists
- Steals
- Blocks
- Threes
- Field-goal percentage
- Free-throw percentage
Points
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (PG/SG/SF – WAS): 51%
Another week, another column with KCP in the points category. We’ve seen the inconsistency he’s known for, but he’s still been a top-80 player this week. He’s playing major minutes for the Wizards and is the best pure scoring option on the wire. Caldwell-Pope’s scoring proficiency is worth the inconsistent output.
Rebounds
Royce O’Neale (SG/SG/PF – UTA): 54%
No disrespect to O’Neale, but is there a more boring player in the league? Jeremy Lamb, maybe? O’Neal nevertheless gets it done for fantasy managers as a mid-tier player. He’s averaging 6.5 boards over the last two weeks and has been a top-40 player in that same stretch. Sometimes boring is good, folks.
Assists
De’Anthony Melton (PG/SG – MEM): 55%
Melton’s steals are coming around, which is one of his biggest value drivers. However, we need to slot him here to accommodate someone else below. Melton fits here, too, as he’s stuffing the stat sheet with no Ja Morant for Memphis. Melton should be over the 60-percent threshold.
Steals
Terence Davis (SG/SF – SAC): 47%
Davis is the top grab if he’s still available off the wire. He should surpass the threshold by next weekend. He’s put up 95 points in his last five games, and he’s had three swipes in two of them. Davis has earned his playing time, averaging 25.6 minutes per game this month despite getting limited to 17 minutes — mostly in the fourth quarter of a failed comeback attempt against the Kings — Saturday night. Grab him and enjoy the return.
Blocks
Herb Jones (SF – NO): 22%
Speaking of returns, the early returns on Jones have been great so far for the Pelicans and fantasy managers alike. Jones is averaging more than 30 minutes per game and accumulating stats across the board. Most notably, he has at least one block in his last six games and has two or more in two of them. I’m not sure how long it will last, but I’m enjoying the ride while it does.
Threes
Chris Duarte (SG – IND): 53%
After a red-hot start, Duarte has cooled off as the Pacers have gotten healthy. However, he just dropped 23 points on the Knicks. More importantly, the Pacers reportedly want to trade their stars. If they follow through, Duarte could have some serious run as a No. 2 option down the stretch. He’s worth stashing now.
Field-goal percentage
JaVale McGee (C – PHO): 24%
We’ve reached the “McGee being a useful fantasy player” part of the season. He’s been a top-65 option this week thanks in part to his 21/15 line Friday night. He’s a per-minute guy, but McGee will put up numbers for those in weekly 15-team leagues.
Free-throw percentage
Brandon Boston Jr. (SG – LAC): 4%
You know the drill by now with this category. We find someone who can knock down free throws, yes, but it’s also to highlight a player who we can’t quite squeeze into any of the above categories. Is Boston good? In this week’s Buy or Sell article, I wrote that I’m selling, but he dropped 27 more points Thursday night. Although I’m still out on him this season, he’s rostered in so few leagues that I’m adding him to the watchlist at the very least.
