East-West Shrine Game Practice Recap (2022 Fantasy Football)

Practice is in full swing for the East/West Shrine Bowl. If you missed my article on notable invites, you can find it here. The East-West Shrine Bowl will kick off this Thursday at 8pm ET on the NFL network. The NFL has partnered with the game, and Baltimore Ravens defensive backs coach D’Anton Lynn (East Team) and Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Marcus Brady (West Team) will serve as each team’s respective coaches.

Kyle Philips (WR – UCLA): 5’11”, 186lbs

There always seems to be one player that gets hype during these types of games, and this week it’s been Kyle Philips. Philips recorded fifty-nine receptions for 739 yards and ten touchdowns at UCLA. Philips finished the regular season rated No. 2 in the Pac-12 in receiving yards per game (67.18) and No. 3 in the league in receptions per game average (5.36). He is being billed at practice this week as the next Hunter Renfrow based on how close their unique measurables are and his route running ability. Philips has been catching everything thrown his way and creating elite separation on his routes.

Pierre Strong Jr. (RB – South Dakota State): 5’11”, 203lbs

We highlighted Strong in our initial article above, and it looks like he is stepping up to the challenge. In practice, he has shown coaches that he is a great rusher and has demonstrated that he may be effective as a receiver. He has caught multiple passes in practice, including an athletic touchdown pass.  There has been a lot of talk about his impressive running style, and he has shown better vision than previously thought. He showed above-average open-field agility, and he has shown that the competition concerns about him playing in FCS may have been overblown.

Jack Coan (QB – Notre Dame): 6’3″, 217lbs

Jack Coan transferred to Notre Dame from Wisconsin last season and was very inconsistent. While he put up above-average numbers last season, throwing for 3,150 yards and twenty-seven touchdowns, Notre Dame’s offense was extremely limited with him at quarterback. Coan dealt with injuries throughout the season, but his inconsistent play and inaccurate throws hurt his draft stock. But it seems Coan came to play this week. He has hit multiple deep balls in practices and has not thrown an interception to date. On top of his good play, he has hit all the measurable boxes that evaluators want.

Tyquan Thornton (WR – Baylor): 6’2″, 177 lbs

Tyquan Thronton out of Baylor also continues to impress coaches with his play. He has been the best receiver in 1v1 drills this week. He has also shown that his thin frame is not a liability, continually playing through contact and making tough catches in traffic. Coaches have raved about his ability to win in the Redzone and be a Redzone mismatch against smaller corners. Thornton has also been winning back-shoulder throws and has put on a clinic catching the football.

Ty Chandler (RB – North Carolina): 5’10”, 203lbs

Ty Chandler is being called the best back in Vegas. The former Tennessee transfer who played at North Carolina last year had a somewhat disappointing 2021. He rushed for 1,092 yards and scored thirteen touchdowns but failed to live up to the hype heading into the year. However, part of that blame needs to be placed on North Carolina’s porous offensive line. Chandler, to his credit, has made the most of his opportunity this week. He has looked explosive in drills and has shown coaches that he can make tough catches out of the backfield. He is being touted as the fastest and quickest running back on the West team. This Thursday, Chandler could have a massive game that would help his draft stock.
