Fantasy Basketball Waiver Wire Pickups: Week 16 (2021-22)

Fantasy Basketball Waiver Wire Pickups: Week 16 (2021-22)

It’s Sunday, and you know what that means.

It’s time to get ready for another week of fantasy hoops. We are already heading into Week 17.

With the NBA trade deadline just a few days away, we’re going to make this a special trade deadline edition of the waiver wire where we’ll look at players you should look to grab before their value soars due to a potential trade.

Each and every week, we’ll look at players that you should consider picking up who are rostered in four different rostership tiers:

  • 50-60%
  • 30-49%
  • 15-29%
  • 0-14%

What’s more, we’ll give you a breakdown of how many games each team has for the upcoming week so that you can maximize the minutes of your streamers.

Without further delay, let’s get to it, starting with the schedule and offensive pace ratings, thanks to our friends at Razzball.

Four games:

CHA, CHI, GSW, MIN, NYK, OKC, PHX, TOR

Three games:

ATL, BKN, BOS, CLE, DAL, DEN, DE, IND, LAC, LAL, MEM, MIA, NOR, ORL, PHIH, POR, SAC, SAS, UTA, WAS

Two games:

HOU, MIL

Rostered in 50-60% of leagues:

Davion Mitchell (PG/SG – SAC): 50%
I hate to question injuries, but the timing around De’Aaron Fox’s extended absence with his ankle injury lining up with the trade deadline is enough to make you at least raise an eyebrow. The fact is, Fox hasn’t developed into the player – real life or fantasy – that we’d hoped he’d grow into by now.

He’s still really, really good, but he isn’t a star, and with Mitchell and Tyrese Haliburton, the Kings could – and probably should – move on from Fox. If that happens, Mitchell becomes a must-start player in 12-team leagues.

Daniel Gafford (C – WAS): 53%
I’ve been down on the Wizard’s centers all season because it was bound to get messy. And sure enough, it has. The most likely outcome is that Washington moves on from Thomas Bryant and/or Montrez Harrell, which would elevate Gafford back into must-start territory in all leagues.

He’s not available in a ton of leagues, but where he is, he needs to be rostered prior to the actual deadline.

Rostered in 30-49% of leagues:

Alperen Sengun (C – HOU): 30%
The Rockets are another team that should be active at the deadline, and whether or not they make a clear path for Sengun to get playing time due to a trade, they have absolutely nothing to play for in the second half of the season.

Sengun should get a ton of run moving forward, and we’ve seen the upside that Sengun has. Sengun has true league-winning ability.

Terry Taylor (SG/SF – IND): 32%
I’m a wrestling fan, so I just think of the Red Rooster anytime I see Taylor’s name.

Truth be told, I had no idea who Taylor was a couple of weeks ago, but it feels like this happens every single year where a player can come out of nowhere, not really be that good in real life, but be a must-roster player down the stretch for a unicorn-type performance.

Taylor is looking like he could be that guy this year.

Rostered in 15-29% of leagues:

Isaiah Jackson (PF – IND): 27%
The Jackson breakout was huge against the Clippers, as he posted a 26/10 line. It showed us what could be if the Pacers trade or rest their big guys.

But then, he injured his ankle Wednesday night.

Why can’t we have nice things?

There’s no timetable for Jackson’s return, but he’s absolutely worth stashing with the deadline less than a week away. He has league-winning ability.

Jaxson Hayes (C – NOP): 18%
It feels like we’ve been waiting forever now for the 21-year-old Hayes to break out for fantasy. And well, he’s still not really close, but with Josh Hart out, Hayes has at least shown some signs of life.

Hayes has posted top-75 numbers in 9-cat leagues the past two weeks, averaging 13/6 over that stretch with a massive 22/11 game.

It’s unclear if the Pelicans are going to buyers or sellers, but Hayes could benefit in either situation.

Rostered in 0-14% of leagues:

KJ Martin (SF – HOU): 7%
Houston could be big-time sellers at the deadline, which means a great opportunity lies ahead for Alperen Sengun, Jalen Green, and Martin.

Sengun and Green are known and rostered already, but Martin’s flying under the radar.

Over his last six games, Martin has averaged 11.8 points, 4.5 boards, 1.5 assists, and 1.3 STOCKS. Expect Martin’s minutes and usage to both go up to make him a must-start player in 12-team leagues.

Damian Jones (C – SAC): 7%
Jones is the player I’m least excited about on this list, but Richaun Holmes has underwhelmed so much this season, and the Kings could look to move him.

Jones wouldn’t have standard-league value, but he’d be looking at more usage and a role in 15-team leagues.
