NBA DraftKings & FanDuel DFS Primer: Tuesday (3/8)

NBA DraftKings & FanDuel DFS Primer: Tuesday (3/8)

It’s actually my birthday today, and I’m looking to have a big payout in DFS! I’ve only had a couple this season, but I’m ready to zone in and get a big one here!

After a large slate on Monday, we’re looking at just six games for this slate. It could be a lopsided one, too, with numerous elite teams facing some of the worst clubs in the NBA. We can only hope that it doesn’t lead to too many blowouts, but there’s still plenty to discuss! One fascinating thing about this slate is all the weird price discrepancies between the two sites. We’ll feature those later in the article, but it will make lineup construction enjoyable on each site.

Injury Report

Core Plays

Ja Morant (PG – MEM): $10,700 DraftKings, $9,900 FanDuel
Ja has been climbing up the MVP ladder for weeks, playing the best basketball of his career right now. He’s got at least 34 DraftKings points in all 33 games since returning from injury, flirting with a 50-point average in that span. His recent form is even more ridiculous, with Ja generating a 53-point average over his last seven games played. We’re certainly not worried about him facing an 18th-ranked Pelicans defense, either, with Morant falling a rebound shy of a triple-double in their one matchup earlier this season.

Evan Mobley (C – CLE): $7,000 DraftKings, $8,100 FanDuel
Mobley is well on his way to a Rookie of the Year Award, and he should be asked to do even more with Jarrett Allen out of the lineup. That’s about 16 points1, 11 rebounds, and 32 minutes that need to be made up, and Mobley will surely be one of the primary beneficiaries. That boost in usage is even more enticing in this matchup, with Indiana ranked 24th in points allowed and 26th in defensive efficiency ratings.

Deandre Ayton (C – PHX): $6,600 DraftKings, $7,300 FanDuel
We’ve been waiting for Ayton to go off in this newfound role, and we finally got our wish on Sunday. DA dropped 45 DK points against the Bucks and needs to keep doing that with CP3, Booker, and Johnson all out of the lineup. That leaves Ayton as the focal point of this offense, generating a 29 percent usage rate with those guys off the floor. We love that here, with Orlando ranked 22nd in total defense while surrendering the third-most fantasy points to opposing centers.

Cash Game Considerations

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (PG – OKC): $10,600 DraftKings, $10,600 FanDuel
Now that Giddey is out of the lineup, SGA is carrying this OKC offense. He’s scored at least 49 DraftKings points in five straight games, averaging nearly 60 DK points per game in that span. That’s truly absurd, and it’s no surprise when you see the lack of talent on this roster. Milwaukee is no easy matchup, but we certainly don’t mind that they play at the sixth-fastest pace in the NBA.

Kevin Love (C – CLE): $5,800 DraftKings, $6,400 FanDuel
We talked about how Mobley sees a boost in Allen’s absence, but Love is probably the biggest beneficiary to that injury. He regularly gets held to 20 minutes off of the bench, but they’re going to need at least 25-30 minutes from him every game now. If you look at the 28 games Love has played at least 22 minutes, he’s averaging 33 DK points per game. That’s a fantastic total from a $6K player, and it should be easy to duplicate against one of the worst defenses in the NBA.

Cameron Payne (PG – PHX): $5,300 DraftKings, $6,600 FanDuel
Someone at DraftKings is sleeping on Payne. This guy has taken over the starting point guard role in Phoenix, running this Suns offense at ease. He averaged 40 DK points per game in his three starts for CP3 last season and has at least 39 DK points in back-to-back games since gaining this newfound role this year. The Magic won’t slow him down, with Orlando ranked 21st in defensive efficiency and 22nd in points allowed.

GPP Targets

Jaren Jackson Jr (PF/C – MEM): $6,800 DraftKings, $6,100 FanDuel
Man, Jackson’s foul issues have killed his numbers recently, but this dude has way too much upside to be this cheap. He’s still averaging 32 DraftKings points per game for the season, showing a 50-point upside on numerous occasions this year. In fact, JJJ has at least 35 fantasy points in 28 games this season, which is all you can ask for from a player in this price range.

Andre Drummond (C – BKN): $5,800 DraftKings, $4,500 FanDuel
This is risky with how low Drum’s minutes have been recently, but with LaMarcus Aldridge sitting this game, Drum should be a lock for 20-25 minutes. He’s been a stud whenever he’s given that opportunity, averaging 34 DK points per game in the 23 outings he’s played at least 18 minutes. Getting 18 minutes isn’t even that much, and it definitely makes him one of the best GPP plays on the board. Not to mention, Charlotte ranks second in pace and 28th in points allowed.

Jae Crowder (SF – PHX): $5,100 DraftKings, $6,100 FanDuel
It’s easy to see why we have all of these Suns. Missing Booker and CP3 leave about 40 shots, 70 minutes, and half of the team’s usage on the table. Crowder has been happy to pick up some of that, scoring at least 26 DK points in six straight outings. His run of consistency lasts much longer than that, too, with JC scoring at least 23 fantasy points in 12 consecutive games. That’s a brilliant floor from such an affordable player, and we can’t overlook the fact that his shot attempts, minutes, and usage are on the rise with both backcourt players on the sidelines.

Value Plays

Isaiah Roby (PF/C – OKC): $5,300 DraftKings, $6,600 FanDuel
This FanDuel price is appropriate, but the DK one is downright silly. This has been OKC’s best frontcourt player for weeks, scoring at least 30 DK points in four of his last six games. He actually has 93.3 combined DK points over the previous two outings, showing just how important he’s become to this team. The simple fact is, Dort, Robinson-Earl, Jerome, Williams Dort, Giddey, Favors, and Muscala are all out for the Thunder, leaving Roby with all he can handle!

Mason Plumlee (C – CHA): $4,700 DraftKings, $5,000 FanDuel
Plumlee has quietly been really reliable for the Hornets, and it’s hard to understand why he remains so cheap. The big man has at least 23 DraftKings points in 16 of his last 19 games, generating a 28-point average in that span. You can’t ask for any more from a player in this price range, especially since he faces a Brooklyn team that ranks 23rd in defensive efficiency ratings.

Landry Shamet (PG/SG – PHX): $3,700 DraftKings, $5,100 FanDuel
Shamet is the final piece to our Phoenix stack. He’s been inserted into the starting lineup with both of those All-Stars missing, playing 34 minutes in the most recent outing. Anytime you get a sub-$4K player getting 30-35 minutes, he’s impossible to avoid. This guy has proven to be a solid per-minute producer in the past, and that should be an easy task against a 22nd-ranked Orlando defense.
