Injury news is coming in hot and heavy. Let’s take a look at the latest news around the league.
Atlanta Braves
Manny Pina (C) – Elbow
Manny Pina is undergoing season-ending wrist surgery. William Contreras will now serve as the primary backup catcher in Atlanta.
Colorado Rockies
Antonio Senzatela (RHP) – Back
Senzatela was removed from his last start after suffering a lower back strain. He was placed on the 15-day IL and has no set timetable for his return.
Detroit Tigers
Eduardo Rodriguez (LHP) – Ribs
E-Rod was placed on the IL on Sunday after suffering a sprain in his ribcage during his last start against Tampa. The delay in the move was due to the pending MRI results that showed enough for them to make the transaction. He will be re-evaluated in early June.
Tarik Skubal (LHP) – Leg
Skubal took a line drive off of his leg during his last start. Manager AJ Hinch has stated that Skubal is “feeling good” and should not miss his next scheduled start in the rotation.
Houston Astros
Jake Odorizzi (RHP) – Lower Leg
After seeming as if he suffered a season-ending injury, Odorizzi’s MRI revealed sprains to the ligaments in his ankle. While he does not have a timetable to return, he was allowed to start playing catch on Friday. Cristian Javier will take his spot in the rotation for the time being.
Kansas City Royals
Salvador Perez (C) – Thumb
Salvy was placed on the IL after suffering a thumb sprain in last Tuesday’s game against the White Sox. It is unclear how low he will need to be out for. MJ Melendez will take over primary catching duties for Kansas City.
Miami Marlins
Jazz Chisholm Jr. (2B/SS) – Hamstring
Jazz was removed from Sunday’s game with hamstring tightness. He was noticeably uncomfortable during Saturday’s game but stayed in throughout the entirety. He will be re-evaluated on Monday to determine the extent of the injury.
Milwaukee Brewers
Willy Adames (SS) – Ankle
After expressing initial optimism, the Brewers moved to put Adames on the IL with a high ankle sprain that he suffered last Sunday. The Brewers are hopeful he will be able to return by the weekend series.
Freddy Peralta (RHP) – Shoulder
Peralta was removed in the fourth inning of his last start and was seen pointing to his shoulder when walking off with the trainers. The Brewers will conduct further testing and provide an update on Monday. After their game, Peralta was placed on the Injured List. This is an injury he dealt with at the end of last season as well.
New York Mets
Max Scherzer (RHP) – Oblique
After removing himself from his last start, it was revealed that Scherzer is dealing with a high-grade oblique strain. He is expected to be out 6-to-8 weeks, depending on how he can progress from the injury.
New York Yankees
Joey Gallo (OF) – Illness
Gallo was placed on the COVID-IL before Sunday’s doubleheader after being held out the previous two games for the Yankees. It is unknown whether he has tested positive for the virus, and his status to return is unknown.
Oakland Athletics
Frankie Montas (RHP) – Hand
After taking a come-backer off his pitching hand, Montas was removed from his last start. X-rays did not reveal any structural damage, and the team remains hopeful that he will be able to make his next start.
San Diego Padres
Mike Clevinger (RHP) – Tricep
Before Sunday’s game, the Padres added Clevinger to the injured list with a right tricep strain. While the extent of the injury is currently unknown, Clevinger will be shut down from throwing while recovering from the injury.
San Francisco Giants
Brandon Belt (1B) – Knee
Belt had a cortisone injection and had his right knee drained, landing him on the Injured List on Sunday. As of now, the team is optimistic he will only miss the minimum amount of time.
Seattle Mariners
Abraham Toro (2B/3B) – Shoulder
Toro was placed on the Injured List before Sunday’s game with a shoulder strain. The Mariners will re-evaluate him closer to the end of the IL stint before making any decisions on his availability to return to the lineup.
St. Louis Cardinals
Steven Matz (LHP) – Arm
Matz was removed from his start on Sunday, grabbing at his throwing arm. After four pitches, the Cardinals noticed a notable drop in his velocity. He is set to undergo further testing on Monday.
Tyler O’Neill (OF) – Shoulder
O’Neill was placed on the 10-day IL with a right shoulder strain after missing two consecutive games for the Cardinals. While there is no clear timetable, he is expected to miss the next week and a half.
Tampa Bay Rays
Wander Franco (SS/3B) – Groin/Hamstring
Franco has been held out of consecutive games while dealing with a groin and hamstring injury. It is something Franco has been monitoring recently and states him getting accustomed to the turf field in the Trop is something that could be causing the delay in healing. Franco was able to pinch-hit on Sunday, but his status should be monitored going forward.
Andrew Kittredge (RHP) – Back
Kittredge was placed on the IL on Sunday with a lower back strain. He had been pitching through some stiffness he was feeling, and the Rays decided not to take any more chances with their closer. He does not have a set timetable for his return and will be shut down from baseball activities for the time being.
Brandon Lowe (2B/OF) – Back
Lowe is facing a multi-week absence as it was revealed he is dealing with a stress reaction in his lower back. He will be shut down for three weeks before being re-evaluated by the team. Once they can do that, he will need about another week to ramp back up. Vidal Brujan should now see an uptick in playing time.
