Injury Roundup: Kris Bryant, Adalberto Mondesi, Mitch Haniger (2022 Fantasy Baseball)

Almost a month on the 2022 season has gone by and, while we have seen a lot of positive updates on previous injuries, others are plaguing impact players on our fantasy rosters. Here are updates from around the league:

Arizona Diamondbacks

Mark Melancon (RP – ARI) – Undisclosed

Melancon was placed on the Injured List with an undisclosed injury. While we do not know specifics, many assume it is COVID-related. There have not been reports of him testing positive and Ian Kennedy (RP – ARI) now looks to be the ninth-inning option for Arizona.

Atlanta Braves

Eddie Rosario (ATL – OF) – Eye

Rosario was placed on the 10-day IL due to blurred vision and swelling in his eye. After a slow start to the season, the issue with Rosario’s eye seems to be the reasoning behind it. He will be out for approximately eight-to-12 weeks. Travis Demeritte (2B,SS,RF – ATL) has stepped up and should continue to see playing time going forward.

Baltimore Orioles

Trey Mancini (BAL – 1B) – Ribs

Although Mancini has not been placed on the IL, he is currently dealing with a rib injury that has kept him out of the lineup throughout the weekend. He should be good to go for the upcoming series that starts Monday but it is something that should be monitored.

Cincinnati Reds

Nick Lodolo (CIN – LHP) – Back

Lodolo was placed on the IL for “precautionary” reasons by the Reds. They expect him to be activated once he is eligible for return, and he will look to take the mound this weekend against the Pirates.

Colorado Rockies

Kris Bryant (3B,OF – COL) – Back

The Rockies placed Bryant on the IL on Friday with a stiff back after being held out of the lineup during the series against the Phillies. He is eligible to come off of the IL on Friday but, as of now, it is unclear if he will be ready to return by then.

Kansas City Royals

Adalberto Mondesi (SS,3B – KC) – Knee

After being removed from a game on Wednesday, testing revealed that Mondesi suffered a torn ACL and has been ruled out for the rest of the season. Nicky Lopez (2B,SS – KC) will now look to be the starting shortstop for the Royals for the rest of the season, should they stand pat with their roster.

New York Yankees

Joey Gallo (OF – NYY) – Groin

After being removed from Saturday’s game against the Royals, Gallo was quoted saying that he isn’t concerned with the groin injury that he is currently dealing with. He is not expected to miss time but the Yankees could be cautious with their outfielder.

Pittsburgh Pirates

Kevin Newman (SS – PIT) – Groin

The Pirates shortstop looks to miss the next three-to-five weeks with a groin strain he sustained last Tuesday. While many expect for Oneil Cruz (SS – PIT) to be recalled, the Pirates have yet to make the move.

San Diego Padres

Wil Myers (OF) – Thumb

Myers was placed on the IL on Thursday with a thumb injury he sustained in Tuesday’s game against the Reds. He does not have a timetable for his return yet and it is not clear whether he will be activated once eligible.

San Francisco Giants

Joc Pederson (OF – SF) – Groin

Pederson was diagnosed with a Grade 1 adductor strain on Friday but has not been placed on the IL yet. The Giants are optimistic that he should not need to be shelved going forward, as he is expected to be out a few days.

Seattle Mariners

Mitch Haniger (OF – SEA) – Ankle

Scott Servais said that Haniger is dealing with a Grade 2 high-ankle sprain and he is expected to be out for an extended period of time. As of now, he looks to miss “months” instead of “weeks.”

Tampa Bay Rays

Ji-Man Choi (1B – TB) – Elbow

Choi is dealing with loose bodies in his right elbow and it led the Rays to placing him on the IL on Sunday. The Rays have not decided whether the injury will require a surgical procedure to address the issue. Yandy Diaz (1B,3B – TB) will get more playing time at first going forward.

Washington Nationals

Sean Doolittle (RP – WSH) – Elbow

Doolittle was placed on the IL with an elbow injury and, as of Wednesday, Dave Martinez said that Doolittle has yet to be cleared to begin throwing. When initially placed on the IL, it was expected that he was slated to miss more than the minimum and it is looking more likely that is, in fact, the case.
