Robert Woods expected to be No. 1 option

Tennessee Titans WR Robert Woods is expected to be the No. 1 option and return in time for Week 1, according to Joe Rexrode of The Athletic. (Source: Joe Rexrode, The Athletic)

Fantasy Impact: After tearing his ACL in mid-November of last season with the Los Angeles Rams, Woods found himself in a peculiar situation this season, both using the offseason to recover and learn a new system. Despite this, Woods and QB Ryan Tannehill have already developed chemistry. It would “take a setback for Woods to be anything but full go by Week 1.” At age 30, Woods is currently being drafted as the WR39 in half-PPR formats, just ahead of his rookie WR teammate Treylon Burks at WR42. If Woods is a full go and a true WR1 at the start of the season, he could easily surpass his current average draft value, especially in an A.J. Brown-less Titans offense with plenty of vacated targets to fill.

Chris Godwin may miss start of 2022 season

Greg Auman of The Athletic “wouldn’t be surprised” if WR Chris Godwin entered the season on the reserve/PUP list. (Source: Greg Auman, The Athletic)

Fantasy Impact: After tearing his ACL in Week 15, Godwin’s timetable has been up in the air for the 2022 season. Regardless, he signed a three-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after QB Tom Brady came back from retirement. With Brady, Godwin has been a target hog, seeing 211 targets in 26 games to go with 12 touchdowns. He’s expected to start training camp on the active/PUP list, but if he lands there to start the season, he will miss at least the first six weeks of the season. At an average draft position of WR20 in half-PPR formats, according to FantasyPros, Godwin’s stock already has missing time baked in to it, but should he miss the start of the year on the reserve/PUP list, that would only boost the newly acquired WR Russell Gage, who sits at WR43.

Terrace Marshall in line for an expanded role

According to Joseph Person, Carolina Panthers’ second-year WR Terrace Marshall has seen his stock rise during minicamp and OTAs, potentially playing all three positions. (Source: Joseph Person, The Athletic)

Fantasy Impact: The Panthers’ second-round WR saw limited playing time in 2021, only catching 17 passes and starting in three games. According to Person, head coach Matt Rhule “talked as though he expects Marshall to be an integral part of the receiving rotation and could line up at all three spots.” The Panthers only had two players receive more than 50 targets all season, and with rumors of a potential retirement from WR Robby Anderson, there certainly is room for Marshall to grow. But with the return of a target monster in RB Christian McCaffrey, as well as the Panthers’ QB struggles from last season, Marshall’s upside could be limited. The Panthers ranked bottom four in passing yards, passing touchdowns and interceptions thrown, but were 14th in pass attempts. Marshall is looking at an average draft position of WR123 in half-PPR formats, according to FantasyPros, proving Marshall to be a potential low-risk, high-reward option.

Desmond Ridder making a competition out of QB role

Rookie QB Desmond Ridder has been impressing the Atlanta Falcons’ staff, including head coach Arthur Smith, and could make a competition for the starting QB spot. (Source: Josh Kendall, The Athletic)

Fantasy Impact: The Falcons brought in QB Marcus Mariota from the Las Vegas Raiders to give him another chance at starting in the NFL, but Ridder has a chance of giving the Heisman winner a run for his money. At Cincinnati, Ridder threw for 3,334 yards and 30 touchdowns, rushing for six with his legs. Both Mariota and Ridder are being drafted outside the top 25 QBs, according to FantasyPros average draft position, but should he find an early-season starting role, Ridder could surpass his QB39 ranking with weapons like TE Kyle Pitts and rookie WR Drake London. According to Kendall, it “won’t be surprising if Ridder takes over Mariota’s starting job at some point this season,” giving the rookie interesting potential in superflex formats.
