Major League Baseball just announced a dozen suspensions for players and coaches who were involved in Sunday’s benches-clearing incident between the Los Angeles Angels and Seattle Mariners. Angels manager Phil Nevin received the stiffest penalty, a 10-game suspension he will begin serving tonight. Jesse Winker received a seven-game suspension, while his teammate Julio Rodriguez received a two-game suspension.
Angels third basemen Anthony Rendon, who is on the injured list and will miss the remainder of the season, received a five-game suspension to be served whenever he is healthy and activated from the IL and is prohibited from sitting on the bench for the next seven games.
Full details are below.

Fantasy Impact: MLB stated the suspension was “for actions that caused the incident and for fighting.” Typically in this situation, players will appeal and continue playing until their appeal is heard. Fantasy managers should keep an eye on Winker’s situation and plan a backup for as long as a week if MLB upholds the punishment.

Anthony Rendon receives five-game suspension

Fantasy Impact: The third baseman was cited for his “actions during the incident and leaving the dugout while on the Injured List.” In Rendon’s situation, he will serve the suspension upon returning from the IL, which will not be until next season. In addition to that suspension, Rendon is prohibited from sitting on the bench for the Angels’ next seven games. Unless you play in a league where bench players earn points for cheering, there is no fantasy impact until 2023.

J.P. Crawford receives five-game suspension

Fantasy Impact: MLB stated the suspension was “for fighting.” Typically in this situation, players will appeal and continue playing until their appeal is heard. Fantasy managers should keep an eye on Crawford’s situation and plan a backup if MLB upholds the punishment.

Julio Rodriguez receives two-game suspension
Major League Baseball announced OF Julio Rodriguez will serve a two-game suspension following the benches-clearing brawl in Sunday’s game against the Angels. (Source: Sam Blum on Twitter)
Fantasy Impact: Rodriguez was suspended less than his teammates for his role in the incident. Typically in this situation, players will appeal and continue playing until their appeal is heard. Fantasy managers will only have to cover two games if MLB upholds the suspension, and hopefully, we will receive word of which two games before the weekly lineup lock deadline.

Raisel Iglesias receives two-game suspension

Fantasy Impact: The Angels closer will most likely appeal his suspension and continue playing until his appeal is heard. Fantasy managers are fortunate that two games might be all he misses. Hopefully, we will know ahead of time when Iglesias will serve the suspension if it is upheld.

Ryan Tepera receives three-game suspension
Major League Baseball announced Ryan Tepera would serve a three-game suspension for his role in the benches-clearing brawl in Sunday’s game against the Mariners. (Source: Sam Blum on Twitter)
Fantasy Impact: Tepera will most likely appeal the suspension and continue playing until the appeal is heard. Fantasy managers who roster Tepera will need to keep an eye on his availability, particularly in weekly leagues where lineups lock on Mondays.
