Christian McCaffrey having workload monitored in camp
The Panthers have implemented a unique practice plan for running back Christian McCaffrey of “off-days intermixed with practicing sans constraints” this traning camp in order to manage his overall health heading into the season according to NFL.com’s Grant Gordon. (Source: Grant Gordon, NFL.com)
Fantasy Impact: The oft-injured stud running back has embraced the approach saying the “days off are important” but also added that he puts in a lot of work with trainers and strength and conditioning coaches on those off-days too. McCaffrey looks to play an entire season for the first time since 2019 when he ran for 1,387 yards and hauled in another 1,005 through the air while combined for 19 touchdowns. Since then, he has played in just 10 of 27 games over the past two seasons due various ailments. Before the injuries began to pop up, McCaffrey had played in 48 consecutive games to begin his career. Even with all of his injuries, McCaffrey still averages 4.6 yards per carry for his career, having amassed 3,587 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns on the ground. Even more amazingly he has nearly as many receiving yards, 3,015, for an 8.4 yards per reception and an additional 17 touchdowns which reminds fantasy managers why they are willing to pay the hefty first-round price tag for McCaffrey. They are also all hoping this health management plan works too and McCaffrey can return to his “Run-CMC” days that lead to him being named All-Pro in 2019.
Kareem Hunt missing practice while awaiting extension
According to Josina Anderson of CBS Sports, RB Kareem Hunt missed team drills with the Cleveland Browns for the second day in a row as he awaits a contract extension. (Source: Josina Anderson on Twitter)
Fantasy Impact: It’s not new news that Hunt wants a new deal, but it is news that he’s sitting out of practice. Hunt enters 2022 on the last year of his deal, and, according to Anderson, has said to members of the organization that he would like to either be paid or traded. According to Spotrac, Hunt’s market value sits around $7 million a year, and paired up with RB Nick Chubb, the Browns have had one of the best RB tandems in the league. He has averaged nearly 70 scrimmage yards per game and has scored 19 touchdowns in three seasons in Cleveland. Whether he gets paid or traded, Hunt maintains low-end RB2 to high-end flex value when he plays as well as handcuff value paired with Chubb.
Elijah Mitchell appears to be clear-cut RB1 in San Francisco
Second-year RB Elijah Mitchell appears to be the clear-cut RB1 for the 49ers this season. (Source: Nick Wagoner on Twitter)
Fantasy Impact: The 49ers have a reputation for switching up RB’s all the time, but it seems like they may have finally found the guy they were looking for. Mitchell thrived after taking the mantle last season, and it looks like the team wants him to continue as their lead back. If he gets the bulk of the work in San Francisco, he is an absolute steal at his current ADP.
Khalil Herbert expected to be more involved in 2022
Bears RB Kahlil Herbert has been getting some work with the first team at practice, and he’s expected to be a lot more involved in 2022. (Source: Chris Emma on Twitter)
Fantasy Impact: Herbert has impressed in the little opportunities he’s been given over his career, and now it seems like the coaching staff really wants to get him involved in the offense. He has gotten some first-team reps at practice, and it is rumored that it may be more of a shared backfield than people think. If true, this news makes Herbert a valuable late pick, and it may hurt some of the value that David Montgomery brings with his projected workload.
