Dolphins vs. Bengals DFS Advice: Optimal Lineups, Targets, Strategy (2022 Fantasy Football)

Daily Fantasy Contests require a different strategy than what you use to set your weekly lineups, and that’s even more true for these “island” or “standalone” games (Thursday Night Football, Sunday Night Football, Monday Night Football, etc.). In these contests, you typically have only a handful of lineup spots and players from just two teams to choose from. If you want to win money (or at least win “big” money in GPP contests), you have to be savvy and take some risks.

I’ll walk you through the current optimal lineups for FanDuel and DraftKings via our DFS Lineup Optimizer and share some of my notes and strategies for this particular matchup. Note: these are the current optimal lineups. For updated lineups based on adjusted projections throughout the day, be sure to access the DFS Lineup Optimizer tool.

Optimal Lineups

FanDuel Optimal Lineup (GPP)

18.7 $15,000
FLEX J. Mixon
MIA @ CIN
19.7 $12,000
FLEX T. Higgins

13.4 $11,500
FLEX D. Smythe
MIA @ CIN
3.2 $6,000
Totals 110.3 $59,500

Notes

This is a pretty standard island game lineup where you stack both quarterbacks and use one cheap dart throw in order to afford the two QBs in your budget. In this case, that player is Dolphins TE Durham Smythe. Is Smythe a lock to score fantasy points for you tonight? No. But he played 74% of Miami’s offensive snaps in Week 3, catching all three of his targets for 23 yards. He’s a cheap dart throw to pair with the premium players filling out this lineup.

DraftKings Optimal Lineup (GPP)

Week 4
POS PLAYER PROJ. PTS SALARY
CPT J. Burrow
MIA @ CIN
31.6 $14,400
FLEX J. Waddle Q
MIA @ CIN
17.4 $10,200
FLEX J. Sanders
MIA @ CIN
7.7 $3,800
FLEX T. Tagovailoa Q

FLEX T. Higgins
MIA @ CIN
16.1 $8,200
FLEX E. McPherson
MIA @ CIN
8.2 $3,600
Totals 97.6 $49,800

Notes

DraftKings makes you declare two players before it lets our lineup optimizer provide your best lineup. So, unlike FanDuel, this lineup won’t be universal because it depends on your initial choices.

I selected Joe Burrow as my captain and Jaylen Waddle as my other selection, and the optimizer filled in the rest. The optimizer added Tua Tagovailoa and Tee Higgins similarly to how it filled out the FanDuel lineup but then needed two dart throws to complete the lineup. In this case, it selected two kickers.

Kickers are a decent floor play but tend to have limited upside, so it can be tricky to include two of them in the same lineup. But they’re also likely have low roster percentage numbers, so you can climb the leaderboard with a few breaks and both quarterbacks having big games.

Yahoo Optimal Lineup (GPP)

POS PLAYER PROJ. PTS SALARY
1.5x J. Burrow
MIA @ CIN
39.9 $32
FLEX J. Chase
MIA @ CIN
24.8 $31
FLEX T. Hill
MIA @ CIN
22.6 $26
FLEX R. Mostert
MIA @ CIN
11.8 $14
FLEX Cincinnati (CIN)
MIA @ CIN
9.8 $11

Notes

Joe Burrow as the MVP pick seems to be the consensus pick across the platforms. That makes sense, given Tua’s injuries. But it also means I’ll probably go contrarian with a few lineups and try out someone like Ja’Marr Chase or Tyreek Hill as my MVP. Speaking of Hill, this is the first optimal lineup that has included him. He’s $5 cheaper than Chase, but our optimizer is including both Chase and Hill while saving money on Raheem Moster and the Cincinnati defense. I don’t hate it for a Thursday game.

OwnersBox Optimal Lineup (GPP)

POS PLAYER PROJ. PTS SALARY

RB R. Mostert
MIA @ CIN
12.5 $4,500
RB J. Mixon
MIA @ CIN
21.9 $6,200
WR T. Hill
MIA @ CIN
26.0 $6,700
WR T. Sherfield
MIA @ CIN

TE D. Smythe
MIA @ CIN
5.3 $3,700
FLEX T. Higgins

FLEX J. Chase

SF J. Waddle Q
MIA @ CIN
24.8 $6,000

Notes

Unlike the other platforms, OwnersBox still uses full lineups for island games. So, this lineup will be different from the others, and you are almost forced to use a couple of dart throws in order to affordably build your lineup. OwnersBox also defines the positions and includes a superflex slot, as opposed to the MVP/Flex setup.

In this lineup, the optimizer went with (shocker) Joe Burrow as the MVP. To avoid going too deep into the depths of these rosters, the optimizer picked Waddle as its superflex and Trent Sherfield and Durham Smythe as its dart throws. With injury concerns surrounding Tua, I like this strategy in GPP and will likely use this lineup in one of my contests tonight.

Lineup Builders

Tee Higgins (CIN – WR)

Joe Mixon (RB – CIN)

Chase Edmonds (RB – MIA)

Dart Throws

Trent Sherfield (WR – MIA)

Durham Smythe (TE – MIA)

Teddy Bridgewater (QB – MIA): This one might seem insane, but I sometimes like to include a backup quarterback in a GPP lineup when there are injury or benching concerns. Tua Tagovailoa is pretty banged up, and there’s a chance he could be knocked out of this one early. If that happens, Bridgewater could come in and put up points with a roster percentage near 0.

Note: Many of the backups for this matchup who could typically be considered dart throws are priced too high to be considered, so I’m leaning more on the high-end players to pair with longshots like the three listed above.
