Fantasy Football Trade Advice: Risers & Fallers (Week 3)

What started out with a whimper ended in a bang as Week 2 was yet another crazy ride for fantasy football managers. Some players performed to expectations, some definitely did not. Here are a few players that saw their trade value rise and fall that you can start to think about trading for or away on your own teams.

Week 3 Risers

Tua Tagovailoa (QB – MIA)

Tua is the easy call for QB riser after his Week 2 performance. He threw a career-high six touchdowns against the Ravens, two each to Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. He officially balled out. Any doubters were effectively silenced, making his trade value rise as a result. Personally, I’m holding him, but now might not be a bad time to shop him to see if you can strike while the iron is hot. Someone might be willing to pay QB2 prices for a player who finishes as QB10, which is still likely.

James Robinson (RB – JAX)

Robinson is a puzzle for fantasy. He wasn’t supposed to be back this soon, let alone be this dominant. His 23 carries were only second to Leonard Fournette on the week, which is crazy. His 15.8 PPR points put him at RB8 for the week, tied with Clyde Edwards-Helaire. For someone who was drafted as a bench player, Robinson has seen his value skyrocket. I’m not sure it’s sustainable, but it’s sure a fun ride to be on if you roster him. If you want to enjoy the ride a little longer, that’s fine, but I might look at getting off before his value goes back down to normal.

Amon-Ra St. Brown (WR – DET)

Week 2’s WR4 is the Sun God himself. Finishing just behind the dynamic Miami duo of Hill and Waddle is great company for a player on a supposedly bad offense. St. Brown caught 9 of his 12 targets for 116 yards and two touchdowns, but his 2 rushes for 68 yards is what stood out most to me. For a bad team, they sure love finding ways to get the ball into the hands of one of their best playmakers in St. Brown. His value isn’t at its peak yet, so I’m not selling, but I love seeing his stock on the rise, for sure.

Drake London (WR – ATL)

Last but not least is the only rookie on my list in Drake London. Sure, Pitts gets a lot of the attention, both in fantasy and from NFL defenses, but London is the one I want more based on the price to acquire him. Pitts has been slow to get going, but London is doing more with less fanfare. His 8 catches on 12 targets for 86 yards and a touchdown just shows how much he matters to this offense, and his price is still likely to be low enough that you can add him on the cheap if you need WR help. His dynasty value is also going up just as quietly, although London managers aren’t likely to give him away after this showing, so be careful offering the farm.

Week 3 Fallers

Kirk Cousins (QB – MIN)

What can you even say about Cousins after his abysmal Week 2 performance? He was QB26 on the week, completing 27 of 46 for a single touchdown and 3 picks. Woof. I would argue that Cousins was already barely worth rostering in 1QB leagues but his value in SuperFlex is currently hanging on by a thread. You can’t move him, but if you just lost Dak Prescott or Trey Lance then perhaps you can get Cousins on the cheap while his value is depressed to get you through a few weeks.

Travis Etienne (RB – JAX)

On the flip side of the Robinson rise is the Etienne fall. Etienne was supposed to be the 1A to Robinson’s 1B, but instead, Etienne is a clear backup at this point. For a player going in the RB dead zone in Rounds 3-5, finishing as RB31 just isn’t going to cut it. No way you can trade him now, but if you’re deep at WR or TE and want to take a flyer that Etienne earns more touches down the stretch then I won’t blame you. He could be a league winner, but he could also be the biggest bust of the year. It’s still too soon to tell, really.

JuJu Smith-Schuster (WR – KC)

You have to scroll way down the list to find where Smith-Schuster finished this week. In PPR he finished at WR82, just behind Kj Osborn, Dezmon Patmon, and Robbie Anderson. Yikes. This is not the kind of output that Juju managers were expecting when they drafted him. I think he’s got brighter days ahead, but he’s going to need more than 3 catches for 10 yards to make him worth rostering. Until then he’s riding my bench, he’s just too unpredictable.

TJ Hockenson (TE – DET)

Last but not least is Hockenson, the lone tight end on my list, and someone I had high hopes for entering the season. Hockenson finished with 3 catches on 7 targets and 26 yards. This TE26 finish is enough to make me look elsewhere for tight-end help and move on from Hockenson until he puts up better numbers. St. Brown can earn enough work in this offense, it’s strange that Hockenson can’t. Until he does, you just can’t risk it at a position that matters so much to your weekly lineup. Hold if you have him though, no reason to give him away until we’re sure he’s toast.
