Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Advice: Players to Hold & Drop (Week 13)

Droppable

It seemed as if Devin Duvernay was poised to become a valuable fantasy asset after Ravens WR Rashid Bateman sustained a significant foot injury. But in the two games since the Bateman injury, Duvernay has had two targets, two catches and eight receiving yards. Drop him.

Cardinals rookie Trey McBride hasn’t exactly stepped up to fill the void created by the season-ending injury to Zach Ertz. In the two games the Cardinals have played without Ertz, McBride has 5-15-0 on seven targets.

Darnell Mooney reportedly will miss the rest of the season after tearing ligaments in his ankle.

Cade Otton had some promising performances when Cameron Brate missed time with a neck injury, but now Brate is back, and he and Otton are dividing TE snaps almost equally. Otton played 36-of-69 offensive snaps on Sunday, ran a route on 19 of them and didn’t draw a single target. He’s out of the streaming TE conversation.

Just think: You can drop Russell Wilson without penalty. The Broncos aren’t so lucky, having signed Wilson to a five-year, $245 million contract extension before the season. You also spent less to acquire Wilson than did the Broncos, who gave up three players, two first-round draft picks and two second-round picks.

Droppable with a chance of regret

We thought Tyler Boyd would be in for a target windfall while Ja’Marr Chase recovered from a hip injury. Boyd’s stat lines in the four games Chase has missed: 3-38-1, 5-44-0, 2-42-0 and 2-16-0. Now, Chase is on the way back to make Boyd a third wheel.

There’s a good chance the Rams will shut down QB Matthew Stafford (neck) for the season, in which case Tyler Higbee would no longer be fantasy-viable. Higbee, who’s dealing with a knee issue, played 32 of the Rams’ 56 offensive snaps in Week 12 and didn’t see a single target from backup QB Bryce Perkins.

Curtis Samuel hasn’t seen more than four targets in a game since Week 7. He wasn’t targeted in the passing game at all in Week 12. Samuel gets a handful of carries every week, but he hasn’t run for more than 29 yards in any game this season. WR Jahan Dotson and TE Logan Thomas are healthy, so there’s more target competition for Samuel these days, and Terry McLaurin remains the alpha receiver in Washington.

Don’t drop yet

Since Week 6, Kareem Hunt has been the RB45 in fantasy scoring. His only value is as a handcuff to Nick Chubb, so instead of dropping him, try trading him to whichever league mate is rostering Chubb.

Some people might be tempted to spite-drop D’Andre Swift after a disappointing Thanksgiving Day performance that was a microcosm of a disappointing season. Don’t do it. No, you can’t safely start Swift at the moment, but at the very least he’s a valuable handcuff to Jamaal Williams, and it’s still possible the Lions recalibrate the division of labor in their backfield at some point and start giving the talented Swift more snaps and touches.
