2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Jammie Robinson (DB – Florida State)

Jammie Robinson (DB – Florida State)

5’11” – 203 lbs.

Background:

Originally attended South Carolina, where he started three games and played heavily overall (679 snaps), mostly in the slot (421 snaps), where he allowed 35/60 passing (3 TD, 1 INT) as a freshman. Played another 679 snaps (402 in the slot), allowing 39/52 passing (1 TD, 1 INT) the following year before transferring to Florida St. Split snaps more evenly between the slot and safety with the Seminoles, quarterbacks going 29/41 with three touchdowns and four interceptions in 2021 and 14/25 with one touchdown and one interception as a senior, playing safety more heavily. Totaled 62, 73, 84, and 99 tackles over those seasons, with four breakups per year in each season but 2021 (three) and 2022 (five).

Positives:

Highly experienced; essentially a four-year starter between two major programs, with experience in the slot, in the box, and as a high safety. Good pre-snap communicator. Has quick feet and sound footwork when covering out of the slot or backpedaling as a high safety. Does a nice job of using his hands to feel routes. Overall reaction times appear at least adequate. Does a nice job of keeping the play in front of him and quickly wraps up opponents after the catch. Appears to have the range to play cover-two as a high safety. Has some suddenness to slip by opposing blockers when playing downhill. Has been a highly reliable tackler in school, missing just 7.3% of career attempts; reliable form tackler who breaks down well in the open field.

Negatives:

On the smaller side for a pro safety. Contact balance is below average. Reliable tackler but doesn’t have a ton of stopping power and doesn’t show a lot of explosiveness to set the tone. Can get grabby at the route stem, although he hasn’t been particularly penalty-prone in college. Limits yards after the catch but didn’t break up many passes and typically allowed a relatively high percentage of targets to be completed; doesn’t provide the tightest coverage through the stem. Raw deep speed appears closer to average. Might struggle to match up against tight ends.

Summary:

A defensive back whose physical/athletic traits are closer to average overall, but who has plenty of experience in different roles in the
secondary, combining the ability to defend opposing receivers from the slot with reliable tackling after the catch and in run support. Should appeal primarily to teams that favor versatility and conservatism in the secondary as a defender who does a nice job of limiting big plays by keeping things in front of him.

Projection: Round 4
