NHL DraftKings and FanDuel DFS Primer: Tuesday (1/10)

Tuesday night in the NHL offers us a ten-game slate to consume, which means there’s plenty of value to obtain when constructing DFS lineups on DraftKings and FanDuel. Nine of the ten games are expected to be close contests, with only Columbus getting over +155 on its moneyline to win outright on the road over Tampa Bay. We’re nearing the halfway point of the 2022-23 NHL regular season and several teams are already emerging as contenders ahead of the playoffs, notably Boston, Toronto, Carolina, and New Jersey. The Western Conference is much more competitive and no team has fully separated itself up until now, but there are undervalued teams such as Seattle and Winnipeg that are perfect toward producing a ton of points in DFS lineups.

Recapping Friday’s recommended prospects is going to be short, since only a couple of players managed to net a point to return value. Neither goaltender between Semyon Varlamov (G – Islanders) and Connor Ingram (G – Coyotes) secured a win, negating most of their saves, while Clayton Keller (LW – Coyotes), Alex Ovechkin (LW – Capitals), and Moritz Seider (D – Red Wings) all were held without a point. Victor Hedman (D – Lightning) did not play due to injury, leaving Tomas Hertl (C – Sharks) and Trevor Zegras (C – Ducks), who each logged a point in a 5-4 win in favor of Anaheim. Overall, it was an underwhelming slate that I’ll use to get much better results for Tuesday’s loaded schedule of games.

Let’s not waste any more time and jump right into eight of my favorite players to target in DFS lineups on Tuesday’s 10-game NHL slate!

Recommended Plays: DraftKings

DraftKings maximum salary is set at $50,000

Sidney Crosby (C – Penguins): $7,000
Veteran center Sidney Crosby has been heating up across his last two games, scoring four points, including three assists, against Vegas and Arizona. Crosby and the Penguins will host the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night and the goal total line is favoring over 6.5, which means there should be enough production for Crosby to be an asset in lineups. He’ll face Canucks goaltender Spencer Martin (G – Canucks), who has surrendered at least three goals in three consecutive starts, all leading to losses. Fire up Crosby as a high-floor, high-ceiling value play against Vancouver.

Tyler Toffoli (RW – Flames): $5,700
Calgary is beginning to improve and shake its losing ways, with a big piece of that force residing in Tyler Toffoli. The 30-year-old winger has a five-game point streak intact entering Tuesday’s road game against St. Louis, netting at least one assist in four consecutive games. Toffoli attempts two to four shots on goal most nights but is a great passer and will face netminder Jordan Binnington (G – Blues), who has surrendered 17 combined goals in his previous four starts in the crease. Toffoli is a massive value at under $6,000 on DraftKings and should be prioritized accordingly.

Mikhail Sergachev (D – Lightning): $6,400
I’m going back to Tampa Bay’s defensemen and targeting Mikhail Sergachev against Columbus. The 24-year-old is a big-bodied weapon all over the rink and while he seldom collects an assist or goal, Sergachev isn’t afraid to let three to four shots on goal rip, while also logging two to three blocked shots per game. This creates a high-floor and while he’s priced a bit high, a plus-matchup against Joonas Korpisalo (G – Blue Jackets) and the Blue Jackets could create an opportunity for Sergachev to score his 30th point of the season at home on Tuesday night.

Andrei Vasilevskiy (G – Lightning): $8,500
As of right now, it appears that Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy will get the start in net against Columbus. The Blue Jackets are the 30th-ranked scoring offense in the league and Vasilevskiy knows them well. Plus, he’s 3-1 in his last four starts and is among the most consistent high-caliber netminders year-to-year, with this season being no exception. Pay up to land an anchor like Vasilevskiy in your DFS lineups.

Recommended Plays: FanDuel

FanDuel maximum salary is set at $55,000

Nico Hischier (C – Devils): $8,000
New Jersey is among the best teams in the entire league this season and they’ll play another talented opponent on the road in Carolina on Tuesday night. While the Hurricanes do have a loaded roster, Nico Hischier has a seven-game point streak entering the game, scoring five goals and three assists during this hot streak. Pyotr Kochetkov (G – Hurricanes), who I have been fond of recommending in the past, has cooled off in the crease lately, allowing four goals in each of his previous starts against the Rangers and Predators. Hischier is on a heater and will be able to return value despite the high $8,000 salary on FanDuel.

Kyle Connor (LW – Jets): $9,200
Speaking of hot streaks, look no further than Kyle Connor. The Jets have found something special in their 26-year-old winger, who has a six-game point streak ahead of Tuesday’s road contest in Detroit. Connor is fresh off of a hat trick outing against Vancouver, scoring three goals on six shots, while also netting five goals and six assists during his current point streak. There’s few players in the league right now providing a ceiling as big as Connor’s. You’re not sacrificing a floor either, as Detroit goaltender Ville Husso (G – Red Wings) has surrendered three to five goals in six consecutive starts.

Brady Skjei (D – Hurricanes): $5,600
As far as defensemen go, Brady Skjei is an active player in the offensive zone. Carolina leans on the 28-year-old for shots on goal, as he takes anywhere from two to six shots on goal per night, while also logging points in each of his past two games. Skjei is a good value despite facing a tough matchup against New Jersey goaltender Vitek Vanecek (G – Devils), who just allowed three goals to the New York Rangers in his last start.

Jake Oettinger (G – Stars): $8,300
Dallas is sitting atop the Central Division standings right now and goaltender Jake Oettinger is a big reason for their success. The 24-year-old netminder has a 2.34 GAA and is 18-6 as a starter, which is a testament to the talent surrounding him. Oettinger has allowed two or fewer goals in five of his last six starts and faces the New York Islanders on the road Tuesday night. The Islanders only average 3.1 goals per game, which is T18th in the league, so with the goal total line set to only 5.5, I like Oettinger to return value in FanDuel lineups.
