Every week, we’ll take a closer look at the upcoming week and rank every starting pitcher based on their overall skills, recent production, head-to-head matchup and park factor. These rankings are for the period from Monday, July 27th to Sunday, August 2nd.

Smash Spots

Hunter Greene (SP – CIN) vs. PIT

After getting rocked in his season debut, Hunter Greene has turned in a pair of strong outings, combining for three earned runs with one walk and 19 strikeouts in 13 innings. Up next is a smash spot at home in an exploitable matchup against the Pirates.

Nolan McLean (SP – NYM) vs. MIA

After allowing six runs against the Cubs on June 24th, Nolan McLean has been rolling, giving up a combined two earned runs in four starts, spanning 24 innings. During this stretch, he’s racked up seven or more strikeouts in four out of five outings. He should roll against the Marlins.

Joe Ryan (SP – MIN) at SEA

Joe Ryan got shelled for eight runs against the Guardians in his first start out of the All-Star break. Bet on a bounce-back in a pitcher-friendly environment against the Mariners. It wouldn’t surprise me if we saw him pitch six innings with eight strikeouts.

Risky Starts

Foster Griffin (SP – WSH) at ATL

Foster Griffin has given up one earned run in each of his last eight starts. He’s been a spectacular signing by the Nationals. But it’s a tough matchup against the Braves up next. Not saying that you’re benching Griffin, but we have to temper expectations.

Peter Lambert (SP – HOU) at ATH

Peter Lambert has been huge for the Astros, giving up two earned runs or fewer in nine of his last 10 outings. But he has to face the A’s at Sutter Health Park next, which is one of the most hitter-friendly environments in MLB.

Nathan Eovaldi (SP – TEX) at TBR

Nathan Eovaldi has hit a rough patch lately, allowing a combined 10 earned runs in his last three starts, spanning 15 innings. I don’t feel confident about his chances of bouncing back against a pesky Rays lineup. He’s definitely a risky start in this one.

Two-Start Pitchers

Griffin Jax (SP – TBR) vs. TEX, vs. CWS

Griffin Jax has been terrific for the Rays since moving to the rotation. He has two home starts on tap next week. Both are exploitable matchups against the Rangers and White Sox.

Michael King (SP – SDP) vs. COL, vs. SFG

Michael King has allowed two earned runs or fewer in five of his last six starts, including exactly one earned run in three straight outings. He’s likely going to have a pair of strong outings at home against weak lineups like the Rockies and Giants.

Justin Wrobleski (SP – LAD) vs. SEA, vs. BOS

Justin Wrobleski has been a valuable innings-eater for the Dodgers all season. Look for him to go six or more innings in each of his home starts next week, even against the Mariners and Red Sox. He’ll have a great chance to get a win or two as well.
