Fantasy Baseball 10 Burning Questions

1. What happened to Paul Skenes?

It’s been a down year for Paul Skenes. He’s proving that he’s human. It’s unlikely that we’ll see him pitch like an ace for the rest of the way, especially since the Pirates are out of contention. The actionable take here is that we’ll get a discount on Skenes and buy back in next year.

2. What happened to Munetaka Murakami?

Munetaka Murakami has been one of the coldest hitters in baseball. His strikeout-heavy approach makes him a hitter prone to prolonged cold streaks. He hasn’t been the same since returning from injury. With that said, his home run on Saturday night could be the start of a hot streak.

3. What should we do with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. next year?

It’s hard to count on Vladimir Guerrero Jr. getting hot for the rest of the season, but at least he’s hitting the ball harder lately. My biggest advice is to buy the dip next year and trust in the track record. It feels like Guerrero is dealing with an undisclosed injury that has impacted his swing.

4. What’s up with Kade Anderson?

It’s been a disappointing start for Kade Anderson. He was so dominant in Double-A that I thought he could carry that over to the Majors, but that hasn’t been the case. I still think he can get it going, but if this continues, it should keep his price in check next year.

5. What to make of Fernando Tatis Jr.?

Fernando Tatis Jr. has turned his season around in the second half. This is the perfect example of trusting in a proven track record. We can look to Tatis’ turnaround as a reason to buy into Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at a rock-bottom cost next season. As for Tatis, enjoy the ride for the rest of the way.

6. What to make of Yusei Kikuchi?

Yusei Kikuchi has been decent since returning from injury, putting him on the radar as a streamer for the rest of the season. There’s strikeout upside here, especially in the right matchup, like we saw on Saturday night against the Pirates. Keep an eye on him on your waiver wire.

7. What can we learn from Gavin Williams?

Gavin Williams was a popular fade among industry experts coming into the season. This was because his SIERA was much higher than his ERA last year. But this was a pitcher with a deep, high-volume arsenal, capable of making an impact in fantasy. The lesson is: Don’t rely only on ERA indicators to figure out your starting pitcher targets.

8. How good is Spencer Jones?

Spencer Jones is the type of hitter that I want to buy next year. He hits the ball hard, plays in a good lineup and seems to be finding his groove in the Majors. I could see his average draft position (ADP) get steamed up because of his loud tools, but if that doesn’t happen, he’ll be an intriguing value.

9. Will Roman Anthony make a late-season impact?

Roman Anthony has looked good for the Red Sox since returning from injury. He’s showing why he was such a highly touted hitter coming into the season. This has been a lost year for him, but that just means we can buy in at a discount next year. Trust in the talent here.

10. What to do with Kyle Tucker next year?

Kyle Tucker has been one of the most disappointing hitters in baseball, similar to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. I’m still a believer, as I like to trust in hitters with lengthy track records. Perhaps this is the case of a hitter succumbing to the pressure of the first year in a lucrative contract. I’m buying next season.
