Fantasy Football WR/CB Matchups: Week 1
The level of data and information available now is completely different from that of 10 years ago. Just look at all the changes and data points FantasyPros now covers. However, there are still some places where you can get an edge. Whether that be your home league, your more serious money leagues, deep charity leagues, DFS slates and more.
The fantasy manager now lives in an age where it is both easier and harder to get an edge. On the one hand, there is unprecedented access to data and information. On the other, it is just as hard to find the right areas that matter.
One area that fantasy managers can still get an edge is by looking at individual matchups across the field. And the biggest one is wide receivers taking on cornerbacks and safeties. Making the right call in your lineup could yield a fantasy manager an extra 5-10 points a week. That alone could be the difference between winning and losing in 2026.
Every week, I’m going to find three matchups that you should absolutely exploit, plus some honorable mentions. Then, I’m going to give you three matchups to either avoid or temper expectations on. Plus some honorable mentions.
All in all, if this article delivers you a few points gained and a few points saved every week, then those points could yield you a playoff berth come holiday season.
Without further ado, please find the top six fantasy football WR/CB Matchups to know for Week 1.
Advantageous Wide Receiver Matchups
Josh Downs (WR – IND) vs. Marlon Humphrey (CB – BAL)
This one might shock fantasy managers who are only looking at box scores and stats from last season. Josh Downs only ran routes on 62.8% of dropbacks, according to the Fantasy Points Data Suite. However, Michael Pittman Jr. was the Indianapolis Colts’ target leader last season with 111 targets. He has since departed for Pittsburgh, meaning Downs has been promoted.
The Colts did add Keenan Allen late in training camp. However, Downs is the healthiest and most ready of the wide receivers on this roster heading into Week 1. He also posted a respectable 0.39 fantasy points per route run last season.
While the Baltimore Ravens do rotate their corners and safeties a lot, and Downs won’t be facing the same coverage most of the game, I expect him to face Marlon Humphrey more often than not. Humphrey is a seasoned veteran. But statistically, 2025 was not his best season. He managed to allow, according to the Fantasy Points Data Suite, a lofty 0.34 fantasy points per route run against him.
For context, of all the defensive backs lining up this week, that was tied for seventh-worst. New head coach Jessie Minter will bring in a new staff with new ideas. However, given Downs’ situation, this looks like a great matchup for a fantasy manager to utilize him in their FLEX slot this week.
Michael Wilson (WR – ARI) vs. Cam Hart (CB – LAC)
There has been a lot of hype on Michael Wilson this offseason. What sent the hype into the stratosphere was his three-year, $75 million extension that was inked this summer. That’s a lot of money for a player with 46 career games and just over 2,100 receiving yards, 14 touchdowns and zero playoff games in his career.
However, because fantasy managers have drafted Wilson rather high this offseason, there is almost an obligation to play him in Week 1. And while Wilson will have career backup Jacoby Brissett throwing him the rock this season, there is some cause for optimism for him, at least for this week.
Wilson, who had a route-run rate of 80.6% last year, did manage to emerge with 0.37 fantasy points per route run, according to the Fantasy Points Data Suite. And he will look to get off to a good start against Cam Hart. Hart allowed 0.33 fantasy points per route run last season. That was the ninth-highest of all cornerbacks playing in Week 1.
Wilson will have tougher matchups this season, and I can see mentioning him a few times in this column this season. Therefore, you need to start him when he has a positive matchup.
Wan’Dale Robinson (WR – TEN) vs. Jarvis Brownlee (CB – NYJ)
Wan’Dale Robinson is someone who benefited more than most from coaching changes this offseason. He links up with his former head coach, Brian Daboll, who is the new offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans. That move in free agency led the Titans to offer Robinson a whopping four-year, $70 million contract.
Robinson is more of a PPR play than a standard scoring play for fantasy managers due to the lack of yards in the slot and the lack of touchdowns. However, if you play in a PPR league, Robinson is likely to be targeted a fair number of times this week.
The new Titans wideout is projected to line up against Jarvis Brownlee of the New York Jets. This will be a game that, according to VegasInsider, will be quite close. The Jets are 1.5-point favorites in a game with a projected total of 39.5 points. Usually, the advice would be to fade as many players as you can in such a low-scoring game.
However, Robinson is expected to get targets against Brownlee. According to the FantasyPoints Data Suite, Brownlee allowed 0.32 fantasy points per route run last season. I would also expect the Titans to rely on Robinson to get the ball out quickly and pick up short-yardage plays to help Cam Ward gain some confidence early.
Robinson looks like a PPR cheat code in Week 1.
Other Notable Advantageous Matchups
- Amon-Ra St. Brown (WR – DET) vs. Jonas Sanker (CB – NO)
- Ladd McConkey (WR – LAC) vs. Garrett Williams (CB – ARI)
- Jameson Williams (WR – DET) vs. Quincy Riley (CB – NO)
- Tee Higgins (WR – CIN) vs. Zyon McCollum (CB – TB)
- DeVonta Smith (WR – PHI) vs. Mike Sainristil (CB – WSH)
Challenging Wide Receiver Matchups
Chris Godwin (WR – TB) vs. Jalen Davis (CB – CIN)*
*Emeka Egbuka is currently listed as questionable but is expected to play. Should that change and he does not start Week 1, you should revise lineup decisions accordingly, especially in PPR. As Godwin could be moved around the field.
Chris Godwin has had a tough couple of years due to injuries. He also now, for the first time, becomes the leader of the wide receiver room following Mike Evans‘ departure this summer. There is optimism within the Buccaneers’ organization that Godwin can showcase some of the prowess that earned him first-team All-Pro honors in 2019.
However, Evans is not the team’s main weapon. That role is reserved for Emeka Egbuka, the second-year wide receiver out of Ohio State. That shouldn’t mean fantasy managers shouldn’t discount Godwin this season. But this is a matchup owners should not get too cute on.
Godwin was drafted by fantasy managers as a FLEX play/bye week fill-in with upside. Therefore, there is no need to risk him in this touch matchup in Week 1.
According to the Fantasy Points Data Suite, Godwin managed 20.1% targets per route run, only running routes on 70.3% of dropbacks last season. That means Godwin will need to see an increase in volume to deliver upside. However, this week, he takes on Jalen Davis of the Cincinnati Bengals. Davis was statistically one of the best slot corners in the NFL last season, only allowing 0.15 fantasy points per route run — the best mark of any slot corner starting the season in 2026.
This is a tough matchup for Godwin in Week 1.
Drake London (WR – ATL) vs. Joey Porter (CB – PIT)
It would appear mad for some fantasy managers to question a matchup for their first-round pick. And I am not suggesting for one second that they should consider dropping London this week. However, most managers will use projections in their fantasy app of choice to set lineups. These are more general projections, and my advice would be to take 2-3 points off of London’s projection, as a safety hedge.
London is a phenomenal wide receiver when healthy and one of the best in the game. There will always be questions about his durability. However, this week, the matchup isn’t a great one. Joey Porter currently leads all Week 1 cornerbacks with the lowest 2025 fantasy points per route run rate allowed last season. His 0.14 fantasy points per route run is unrivaled.
Quarterbacks and offensive coordinators targeted Porter only 12.9% of the time last season, according to the Fantasy Points Data Suite, because they know how difficult he is to beat in coverage.
Don’t be surprised to see Atlanta run the ball more, or utilize other weapons more frequently against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and London sees fewer targets than usual. However, London can still feast on fewer targets.
Terry McLaurin (WR – WSH) vs. Quinyon Mitchell (CB – PHI)
Terry McLaurin finds himself in a situation very similar to Drake London. There is no doubt he will dominate targets for the Washington Commanders most weeks. Not to mention, he will also get better quarterback play this season now that Jayden Daniels appears healthy.
However, in this game, there are two factors to consider. The first is game script. VegasInsider has the Commanders as 5.5-point underdogs against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1, which is the fourth-highest total on the slate. The game is also slated to be low-scoring, with the over/under currently set at 44.5 points.
The second factor is Quinyon Mitchell. He does not get the same hype as teammate Cooper DeJean. However, he is arguably just as important to the Eagles’ secondary. He conceded just 0.18 fantasy points per route run last season. Which, considering he is the team’s second cornerback, as DeJean is the option most quarterbacks and offensive coordinators fade, is rather impressive.
This matchup isn’t suited to a huge game for McLaurin. However, talent and garbage time points could yield a decent week for him. Fantasy managers should temper expectations, though, and look to find upside elsewhere.
