Fantasy Baseball Two-Start Pitchers: Rankings & Pickups (Week 24)

Fantasy Baseball Two-Start Pitchers: Rankings & Pickups (Week 24)

You should be grinding fantasy baseball two-start pitchers to give you an advantage over your competition.

Each week, I will be giving you a breakdown of the two-start options for your fantasy leagues, broken up into the following tiers:

  • Must Start: Pitchers you have to start because of their talent and/or matchups.
  • Should Start: Pitchers that are rostered in most formats and probably should be in your lineup.
  • Here We Go: Pitchers that you are probably starting in most formats, but have some level of risk to them.
  • Feeling Lucky: Pitchers that are risky, but viable in deeper formats.
  • Desperate Measures: Pitchers you shouldn’t use unless you have no other choice.

Make sure you are aware that when making fantasy baseball start or sit decisions, these projected two-start pitchers are subject to change.

Fantasy Baseball Two-Start Pitchers: Week 24

Let’s explore this week’s fantasy baseball two-start pitchers, ranging from must-start options to those you should probably avoid.

Must Start

Should Start

Michael Wacha (SP – KCR) at HOU, at PIT

Michael Wacha continues to be about as solid a pitching option as there is, turning in his fifth straight sub-4.00 ERA season and his fourth season with a 3.35 ERA or better out of the last five. He has two tough matchups this week, and he isn’t a great source of strikeouts or wins, but he should be used in most formats.

Ryan Johnson (SP, RP – LAA) vs. SEA, vs. MIN

Ryan Johnson’s overall line doesn’t look very good, but over his last seven starts, he has a 2.11 ERA in 38.1 innings. This coincides with the Angels firing pitching coach Mike Maddux and changing their approach on the mound.

Johnson has a good matchup at the beginning of the week and a tougher one at the end of the week, but you should be riding the hot streak to see if it lasts.

Troy Melton (SP – DET) at TOR, at CWS

Troy Melton has been great since coming up from the minors, throwing 108 innings with a 2.42 ERA and 87 strikeouts. He has struggled lately, but with a great matchup against the Blue Jays to start the week, you are using him in most formats.

Here We Go

Jose Soriano (SP – TOR) vs. DET, at TEX

Since being traded to the Blue Jays, Jose Soriano has been somewhat hit or miss, throwing 40 innings over seven starts with a 4.05 ERA and 27 strikeouts. He has two good matchups this week, which makes him a bit more enticing, but the strikeouts have disappeared recently, and there isn’t a ton of win upside.

Will Warren (SP – NYY) at MIN, at ARI

Will Warren has been up and down all season, but he has been better in his last five outings, throwing 24.1 innings with a 2.22 ERA and 24 strikeouts. He has two good matchups versus a depleted Twins team and a Diamondbacks offense that has struggled against righties this season.

Brandon Young (SP – BAL) at NYM, vs. MIL

Brandon Young has had a pretty good season, throwing 140.2 innings with a 3.71 ERA and 112 strikeouts this season. He has a tough matchup at the end of the week, but faces a bad Mets offense in a good park to begin the week, making him an interesting deeper league gamble.

Jonah Tong (SP – NYM) vs. BAL, vs. PHI

Jonah Tong returned from the minors last week and put up a bad stat line, but the underlying skills were pretty good. He struck out seven and only walked one in five innings against Miami.

The talent is immense for Tong, but he hasn’t found success in a limited sample yet in the Majors. Maybe it comes next season, but he has a ton of upside, and these matchups aren’t scary.

Quinn Mathews (SP – STL) vs. SFG, vs. WSH

Quinn Mathews is coming off of a nice performance against the Giants last week and faces them again to start this week. The Giants are terrible versus lefties, and while the Nationals have been solid against lefties, their offense is not as strong as it was earlier in the season.

Feeling Lucky

Erick Fedde (SP, RP – CWS) at CLE, vs. DET

There isn’t a lot of upside for Erick Fedde, but he has pitched well over his last three starts, and the White Sox should give him decent opportunities to get a win or two.

Griffin Jax (SP, RP – TBR) vs. ATH, vs. BOS

Griffin Jax’s line since the All-Star break has been pretty ugly, but it is largely based on two blowups that have ruined his numbers.

In his other four starts, he has been fantastic. He has a great matchup against a bad A’s offense at home to start the week, but a risky one versus the Red Sox at the end, so there is a high risk/high reward proposition for the week.

Kade Anderson (SP – SEA) at LAA, at COL

Kade Anderson has struggled since coming up from the minors, throwing 21 innings over four starts with a 4.29 ERA, a 1.38 WHIP and 16 strikeouts. The prospect pedigree on Anderson is elite, but these aren’t great matchups against two teams that are better versus lefties.

Casey Mize (SP – SDP) at COL, vs. MIA

Casey Mize has struggled since joining the Padres, posting a 6.34 ERA over 32.2 innings with 22 strikeouts. However, he is a much better pitcher than he has shown, and despite having to go to Colorado, these are pretty good matchups if you are willing to risk it.
