Notes
Nola took another major leap forward last year, and while he may never be a 300 or even 250 strikeout guy like the handful of pitchers being drafted above him, 220+ with a sub 1.00 WHIP and 2.50 ERA will certainly warrant a third round pick
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
Thor has elite stuff without a doubt, but the numbers haven't quite made it to the top tier of pitchers. Rather, he has just one season with 170 strikeouts and has yet to win 15 games. You may argue that a Cy Young is right around the corner, but we've been saying that for three years now and it is starting to look like we have another Strasburg on our hands
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
While Nola's 2018 surface numbers suggest a big breakthrough, the advanced metrics show that he has been largely the same pitcher over the last three seasons, just in more innings. His strikeout and walk rates remained nearly identical, and he generated a similar amount of soft contact, but the difference was that his left-on-base percentage rose and his BABIP allowed dropped in a big way. As a result, his ERA was much lower than his FIP and xFIP, after lagging behind those metrics in 2016 and 2017. Nola's peripherals have consistently indicated that his true skill is that of a pitcher with a low-3.00s ERA and WHIP in the 1.10-1.20 range, so that' should be our baseline expectation for 2019.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
There is little doubt that Thor is a fantastic pitcher when healthy -- he has a 2.93 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 9.95 K/9 rate through 518 1/3 career innings. The issue, of course, is that Syndergaard has yet to reach 200 innings in a season, and has managed less than 155 innings in three of his four seasons in the Majors. As such, his value is very much format-dependent. He is significantly more valuable in a roto league with a low innings cap than he is in a points or categories league, and he's better suited to shallower leagues, where the replacement pitchers available on the waiver wire are better.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
Nola won't sustain a pristine 2.37 ERA, but only nine starters posted a higher FIP than his 3.01. He yielded the second-lowest hard-hit rate (25.1%) behind Zack Wheeler and should keep striking out more than a batter per frame with support from his 12.4% swinging-strike rate. Although 2018 represents his ceiling, the 25-year-old's regression should still represent a lower-level ace.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
The SP1 ceiling remains for Syndergaard, who registered a 3.03 ERA over 154.1 innings last year. Baseball's hardest-throwing starter submitted the lowest hard-hit rate (21.9%) and barrels per plate appearance (1.4%). His K/9 dropped nearly a run despite maintaining an elite 13.6% swinging-strike rate, so he could return to upper-echelon strikeout dominance. Although elite on a per-inning basis, he has never exceeded 183.1 frames in a single season. He's not durable enough to trust as a top-10 ace, but Thor could easily invade that territory by staying healthy.
