Notes
Bichette missed about half the season with a knee injury last year, but was productive when he was on the field, batting .301 with an .840 OPS. His 162-game pace was 28 home runs, 100 runs, 128 RBI, and 22 steals, so he was well on his way to earning his lofty draft price. If there was a wart to Bichette's season it was that his walk rate dropped to just 3.9%, one of the worst in the league. But, given that he had just 128 plate appearances, that's likely just the product of a small sample size, since he never walked at less than a 6.6% clip in his career. Batting in a stacked lineup, Bichette should once again put up strong five-category numbers, and should be one of the first shortstops drafted in fantasy leagues again in 2020.
Dan Harris - FantasyPros
Scherzer had a decent season for a mortal, but for someone with his career track record, it was a major disappointment. His 3.74 ERA was his highest since 2012, his 1.38 WHIP the highest of his career, and his 7.8% walk percentage his worst in a decade. Scherzer still struck out plenty of batters but entering his age-37 season and with a ton of mileage on his arm, it's only fair to accept that the old Scherzer is gone for good. But though he may not be a consensus top-three starter anymore, he's still perfectly capable of being a fantasy ace. After all, Scherzer's velocity hasn't declined much, and his 31.2% strikeout rate was tied for 10th among starters. Scherzer likely won't reach 200 innings pitched again and his ERA seems destined to remain above 3.00 going forward, but he's far from someone to avoid in fantasy drafts.
Dan Harris - FantasyPros
Bo Bichette slashed .301/.328/.512 with five home runs and four stolen bases across 128 plate appearances in 2020. The 22-year-old has successfully swiped eight bases in just 13 attempts in his MLB career, but has yet to flash the speed he displayed in the minors. He has a ton of upside and should once again produce in a loaded Blue Jays lineup. Bichette has plenty of room for growth and is considered a top-10 middle-infield option in 2021.
Brad Camara - FantasyPros
Scherzer's 4.21 xERA from the 2020 season was the first time that he didn't rate out well since Statcast began tracking this data in 2015. His surface level numbers didn't suffer all that much, especially when it came to strikeouts, which makes this a dangerous profile to bet on. And that's before we mention the fact that Scherzer will turn 37 this summer. Can we trust him to stay healthy over the course of a full season? It never feels good betting against Scherzer, but there are some safer options going around his ADP right now.
Brendan Tuma - FantasyPros
Frankly, I've been shocked to see how high Bichette is going in fantasy drafts so far this offseason. We're spending second-round picks on a player with just 75 big league games to his name? Of course, his 162-game pace equates to 35 homers and 17 stolen bases, and Toronto's lineup only got better this winter. There are a lot of reasons to be bullish on Bichette these days, but I can't pass on established studs like Xander Bogaerts and Nolan Arenado for him. Perhaps Bichette's aggressive ADP is due to the need for stolen bases. In that case, it's worth pointing out that the youngster is just 8-for-13 in theft attempts to begin his career.
