Edwin Diaz
News
Edwin Diaz has yet to be formally named the Mets' closer heading into the start of the regular season. Manager Luis Rojas declined to commit to Diaz as the team's closer, admitting "I don't know yet. We'll get there at some point."
Connor Rooney
Sun, Jul 5th
Mets reliever Edwin Diaz did not a allow a baserunner or strike out a batter over the course of a scoreless inning in Wednesday's win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Notes
Last year, fantasy managers were trying to decide between Freddy Peralta, Corbin Burnes and Brandon Woodruff. We know who the clear winner was. If Woodruff didn't miss time with an oblique injury, there's no telling how good he'd be. The Brewers bullpen will be relied upon heavily with their other starters, so expect Woodruff to be the go-to length pitcher for them this year.
Michael Waterloo - FantasyPros
Jarred Kelenic was traded for Edwin Diaz and Robinson Cano. Diaz will get another shot to make this trade seem a little less bad than it was, but with Dellin Betances waiting in the wings, the leash won't be long.
Michael Waterloo - FantasyPros
Woodruff earned his breakout 2019, relying on his elite fastball to limit hard contact and avoid big innings. His solid control allows him to keep the line moving, and the Brewers' strong lineup adds to his win potential. Although he missed a large chunk of the season due to injury, he should be ready to lead the Brewers rotation this year, and can and should be drafted as a strong second-tier starter.
Dan Harris - FantasyPros
Diaz's season was an unmitigated disaster. While his strikeout rate remained strong, his ERA ballooned to 5.59, his home run rate rose to comical levels, and his control waned. By the end of the season, he had ceded save opportunities to Seth Lugo and was relegated to mopup duty. Diaz's slider went from being unhittable in 2018 (.129 BAA) to getting crushed in 2019 (.297 BAA). He'll enter 2020 as the closer for the Mets, and reliever volatility is well-known, so don't be surprised to see Diaz rebound big-time in 2020. But just don't go into your season banking on it.

3.01 FIP suggests he has room to improve if he can stay healthy
Brendan Tuma - BettingPros
Diaz is clearly an exceptional talent as demonstrated by his insane 2018 campaign, but we are talking about a 10th round pick who didn't even manage to finish among the top 50 relievers last season. Sure, the 5.59 ERA and 1.38 WHIP are likely to come down but will it happen long enough to hold onto the closer job all year?
