Notes
Phillies manager Gabe Kapler refused to commit to a single closer in 2018, and that will reportedly happen again in 2019, even after Philadelphia spent $23 million this offseason to bring in Robertson on a two-year contract. Robertson and Seranthony Dominguez are the two logical candidates to share the closer's role, but further late-inning shenanigans simply can't be ruled out from Kapler.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
Over his first three seasons with the Dodgers, Maeda has finished as the SP19, SP33, and SP49 in standard 5x5 rotisserie leagues, despite averaging just 145 innings pitched per season. He is a good bet to again produce an ERA around 3.80, WHIP around 1.20, and better than a strikeout per inning. While it would be unwise to expect more than around 130 innings from Maeda this season, given how the Dodgers have handled Maeda and the rest of their pitching staff over the last couple years, he's proven he can be a solid mixed league asset even with a limited workload. He's particularly valuable in shallower leagues (10/12 team leagues with short benches) and leagues with multiple DL spots, since there will be decent fill-ins available for the starts he misses in those formats.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
Robertson, the owner of a 2.88 ERA and 2.81 FIP, has posted a K/9 of 10.4 or higher in each of his 11 MLB seasons. In most leagues, it's not the end of the world if he isn't Philadelphia's full-time closer, the likely outcome given Gabe Kapler's diversified ninth-inning usage last season. He should at least be in line for some saves alongside Seranthony Dominguez and Hector Neris, making him an intriguing speculative pick once the sturdier choices (there aren't many) fall off the board.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
Maeda recorded a 3.30 FIP and 27.7 K% as a starter before getting moved to the bullpen with a case of Dodgeritis. The Dodgers indicated that he will open with a rotation spot in lieu of Ross Stripling and Julio Urias, but he remains reasonably priced around the pick-200 range. That's a fair cost to pay for 130 innings with ample strikeouts and ratios close to his career 3.80 ERA and 1.13 WHIP. Ride him out of the gate, but consider trading Maeda before another bullpen move if he starts strong.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
It was easy to forget how great Robertson is since he only managed 19 saves over the past two seasons. He has racked up 88 Ks per season and excellent ratios over the last 8 years, however. With plenty of save opportunities in store, we could see him return to being a top 10 closer this year.
