How why are you willing to take a guy who batted .186 last season? Turns out the answer is pretty high for Sanchez, who's challenging J.T. Realmuto as the top catcher off the board. He did, after all, hit .284/.354/.568 in 754 prior MLB plate appearances. A groin injury also hampered his production, and he additionally underwent offseason shoulder surgery. He struggled mightily against breaking balls, but actually deposited more walks without significant contact declines. The average could easily rise back to .250 with around 30 long balls, but is that enough to justify an investment around pick 60? Catcher is worse than usual, but that's still too steep in one-catcher formats.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
Contreras was a major disappointment for fantasy owners in 2018 after starting off his career with 33 HRs, 109 RBIs and a .278 batting average through 629 at-bats in his first two years. He is still young, however, and expected to improve from last season.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
Sanchez flashed his sky-high fantasy upside in 2017, when he hit .278 with 33 HRs and 90 RBIs -- truly difference-making numbers at fantasy baseball's weakest position. But he displayed his risky floor in 2018, as he hit just .186 and played in only 89 games due to nagging groin and shoulder injuries. Sanchez is due for a good bit of positive batting average regression following last year's anemic .197 BABIP, and there is little doubt he can again top 30 home runs if he remains healthy. He is certainly a risk/reward option, but he's easily a top-two fantasy catcher heading into 2019 and could be a decent value in drafts coming off a down year.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
A rising star came crashing down when Contreras cratered to .249/.339/.390 with 10 homers in 544 plate appearances. He again hit ground balls on over half of his batted balls, but this time it came with fewer hard hits (28.9%) and more pop-ups (10.3%). A terrible second half (.264 wOBA) derailed this season, so it wasn't even a full year of regression. Even if not anticipating a full revival, the catching pool gets bleak enough to secure him as a top-eight option at worst.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
There is no getting past the fact that Sanchez was a train wreck last season., batting .186 with only 18 homers. With that said, he is still just 26 years old and we are talking about the fastest player to ever reach 50 homers in the MLB. Chance are high that he will bounce back in the batting average department, and if he can stay healthy, bank on 25 to 40 homers making him well worth a 7th or 8th round pick.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
Contreras had a horribly disappointing 2018 season, hitting just 10 home runs after belting 21 long balls the previous season. The lack of homers was also responsible for lopping more than 25 points off his batting average, as his strikeout rate and BABIP were virtually identical to 2017. Of particular concern was the decline in his hard hit rate, in a year when most players saw their hard hit rates soar. Contreras is just 26 years old and didn't deal with any notable injuries last season, so the sudden drop in power is tough to explain. It stands to reason that a big bounce back could be in store, but he has to be viewed as a boom-or-bust option coming off a lost year.
