Notes
How why are you willing to take a guy who batted .186 last season? Turns out the answer is pretty high for Sanchez, who's challenging J.T. Realmuto as the top catcher off the board. He did, after all, hit .284/.354/.568 in 754 prior MLB plate appearances. A groin injury also hampered his production, and he additionally underwent offseason shoulder surgery. He struggled mightily against breaking balls, but actually deposited more walks without significant contact declines. The average could easily rise back to .250 with around 30 long balls, but is that enough to justify an investment around pick 60? Catcher is worse than usual, but that's still too steep in one-catcher formats.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
Grandal's batting average may not seem all that appealing in the .240s range, but that is actually at replacement-level for the position so he won't hurt you there. He will definitely help in HRs, RBIs and runs, though. Over the last three seasons, he trails only (the injured) Salvador Perez in homers, and that was before he moved from an awful park for hitters in L.A. to a hitter's have in Milwaukee.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
Sanchez flashed his sky-high fantasy upside in 2017, when he hit .278 with 33 HRs and 90 RBIs -- truly difference-making numbers at fantasy baseball's weakest position. But he displayed his risky floor in 2018, as he hit just .186 and played in only 89 games due to nagging groin and shoulder injuries. Sanchez is due for a good bit of positive batting average regression following last year's anemic .197 BABIP, and there is little doubt he can again top 30 home runs if he remains healthy. He is certainly a risk/reward option, but he's easily a top-two fantasy catcher heading into 2019 and could be a decent value in drafts coming off a down year.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
Grandal got off to a torrid start last season, hitting .315 with 20 RBIs and 13 extra base hits last April, but his end-of-season numbers looked quite similar to the prior two years. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, as Grandal ranks among the top five catchers in HRs, RBIs, and runs over that span. Now he moves to Milwaukee, where he'll get a ballpark upgrade and hit in a comparably potent lineup. He stands a good chance to again be a top-five backstop in standard 12-team leagues.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
There is no getting past the fact that Sanchez was a train wreck last season., batting .186 with only 18 homers. With that said, he is still just 26 years old and we are talking about the fastest player to ever reach 50 homers in the MLB. Chance are high that he will bounce back in the batting average department, and if he can stay healthy, bank on 25 to 40 homers making him well worth a 7th or 8th round pick.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
While the gut reaction to signing with the Brewers was to shoot him up the rankings, Grandal actually hit better at Dodger Stadium (.363 wOBA) than on the road (.341 last season). Rather than expecting a production spike, investors should simply accept what he is. The 30-year-old catcher will hit around the .240 range with a high walk rate (13.9% in 2018) and around 25 homers. That will look a lot better after looking at guys available to drafters who punt the position. Keep an open mind to Grandal, who should get targeted more aggressively in two-catcher and OBP leagues.
