Notes
Leclerc emerged from relative obscurity in 2018 to become a dominant closer, producing a 1.56 ERA, 0.85 WHIP, and 13.27 K/9. That performance clearly impressed manager Chris Woodward, who has left no doubt that Leclerc will be the Rangers' closer again in 2019. He could be one of the better fantasy closers in the league even if Texas doesn't win a ton of games.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
The Rays appear to be in no hurry to name a closer, and they may not assign the job to a single pitcher. But the early frontrunner should be Jose Alvarado, who earned eight handshakes last year while posting helpful ratios.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
Essentially the Blake Snell of relievers down the stretch, Leclerc allowed just nine hits and two runs-both on July 28-over his final 28 innings. If going two entire months without allowing a run wasn't impressive enough, he yielded one extra-base hit (a double) while stockpiling 29 strikeouts and six walks in his final 20 frames. The Rangers have accordingly committed to the 25-year-old as their Opening Day closer. If he can sustain last season's late command improvements, he could keep the role all year as a top-five stud with 100-strikeout capabilities. A career 16.0% walk rate and a lackluster Rangers squad present some significant pitfalls, but the sky-high upside makes him an alluring second-tier breakout option.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
Searching for this year's Blake Treinen? While Alvarado doesn't tout the same job security, he also rode elite strikeout (30.4%) and ground-ball (55.0%) rates to a 2.39 ERA and 2.27 FIP in 2018. If he can improve his BB/9 from 4.08 into the 3.00-3.50 range, we're looking at a top-tier reliever. Unfortunately for most fantasy players, the Rays are hardly bothered by defying bullpen conventions. They might not ever pick a set closer, but Alvarado is by far the best bet to thrive if given the role. He's worth targeting when all of the stable save sources are gone in a draft, which will happen sooner than you think.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
Don't look now, but Leclerc may already be the most dominant reliever in baseball. His ERA last year was 1.56 with a 0.850 WHIP and 13.3 K/9. The saves could triple to 35+ this season so don't hesitate to reach a few rounds to secure a stud on draft day.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
With a full season as the Rays' closer, Alvarado could end up one of the top 10 closers in baseball. There is some more risk with him than the guys who have done it for years, but we could be looking at 90 Ks with excellent ratios and 35 saves which makes him a total steal late in drafts.
