Notes
A second-half slump removed Ramirez from the AL MVP and No. 1 pick conversations. Don't punish him too severely for the .218 batting average after the All-Star break, as the 26-year-old infielder still tallied 39 homers, 34 steals and 26 more walks (106) than strikeouts (80). Given his excellent plate approach and career 88.0% contact rate, his average should improve from .270 closer to his .285 career norm if he curtails last year's pop-up woes (13.0%). After giving everyone a late scare in spring with a knee injury, he's expected to be ready for Opening Day.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
Albies got off to a torrid start in his first full season in the Big Leagues, hitting nine home runs in April and heading into the All Star break with 20 HRs and nine steals. He struggled mightily in the second half of the season, but still finished as a top-three second basemen in standard 5x5 formats. There are some concerns that the Braves' acquisition of Josh Donaldson could push Albies down towards the bottom half of the lineup, hurting his counting stats and ability to steal bases, but it's also possible he'll stick in one of the first two lineup spots. Regardless, Albies has already proven he has 20-20 potential and should even be able to improve a bit on last season's .261 batting average.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
Jose Ramirez may have been the best fantasy player in baseball last year, knocking 39 homers with 34 steals, 110 runs and 105 RBIs, but he is still 1-C behind both Trout and Mookie Betts because of their consistent production over the last three seasons
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
Anyone who drafted Albies was already miles into a victory lap by the time his performance plummeted. After already validating an investment with 20 homers and nine steals in the first half, he hit a gruesome .226/.282/.342 with four homers and five steals after the All-Star break. His hard-hit rate dipped from 38.5 to 27.0%. He procured 16 homers in 1,744 minor league plate appearances, so drafters should be dubious of a full power repeat regardless of the steep splits. The bigger concern is whether he can fix his late contact woes, particularly his 39.6% outside-swing rate. If maintaining last year's .305 OBP, the Braves will eliminate any chance of another 105-run campaign by hitting their youngster sixth or seventh more often than first or second. There's too much upside to fade Albies entirely, but a top-50 pick is too rich.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
Ramirez was the fourth-most valuable player in standard 5x5 leagues last season, according to Baseball Monster, trailing only J.D. Martinez, Christian Yelich, and Mookie Betts. And that was with a .270 batting average that was 15 points below Ramirez's career .285 mark, due to an abnormally low .252 batting average on balls in play (BABIP). While Ramirez's average is very likely to rise, his career-high 39 home runs and 34 stolen bases are should go in the opposite direction. Still, we're talking about a player who can produce a 30-20 season with a plus batting average. It's hard to argue too much with his current ADP of third overall behind Mookie Betts and Mike Trout.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
Albies is dripping with potential and there is no denying that after his 20 homer first half with 9 steals. With that said, his second half was dreadful, batting .226 with just 4 bombs. There is a chance he returns first round value, but the downside would torch your team if he returns to second half form.
