Notes
Josh Donaldson showed that he wasn't quite done yet, as he had a big prove-it year in Atlanta after missing chunks of two straight seasons in 2017 and 2018. Donaldson had his elite plate discipline and power all season, and now he enters a lineup that led baseball in home runs last year. What's not to love? Well, we can't really ignore that he missed those two large chunks because of injury, especially with a 34-year-old. Between the chance of injuries popping up again and just really an overall decline in the skill set due to his age, there are yellow - not red - flags when considering Donaldson.
Michael Waterloo - FantasyPros
Fluke. That's the best word to use to describe Anderson's 2019 season. Now, do I think he'll be bad in 2020? No, I don't. But, there's no chance Anderson leads the league in batting average again. Anderson is a career .276 hitter, and he hit .335 last year. If you look at his xBA, though, it was .294, making his gap between his expected average and actual average the fourth-largest in baseball. To be fair, .294 is one hell of a mark, but looking around .270-.280 is more realistic for Anderson. He'll be leading off for a great lineup, so his runs should be high, but looking at his exit velocity (36th percentile) and hard hit rate (39th percentile), we should temper expectations of a 20-homer season. It hurts Anderson that he plays shortstop, which along with third base, is the deepest position in fantasy this year. He's an easy fade this year given the other options at the position.
Michael Waterloo - FantasyPros
Donaldson played it right, betting on himself with a one-year deal and turning in a patented monstrous power season with the Braves. He'll now move on to the Twins where you can expect more of the same. Not only do the Twins boast one of the best all-around lineups in baseball, but park factors actually favor Target Field over Truist Park for home runs and doubles. Expect a repeat of 2019, with perhaps a little more.
Dan Harris - FantasyPros
Anderson missed 40 games last year but still nearly went 20/20 with 81 runs. If that was all, it would have been a killer season but he also happened to bat .335 for the Sox. We can expect that to drop to near or even below .300 this year but that is still a great buy around the 8th round.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
Yes, Donaldson hit 37 homers last year with 90+ runs and 90+ RBIs but this is a player who missed 160 games over the prior two seasons and won't offer average or steals to counteract the injury risk. With that said, his upside looks nice in the 9th round.
