Notes
The Blue Jays took on Ken Giles in the Osuna trade last year. Although Giles' 2018 stats don't look pretty at first glance, his underlying numbers - including a terrific 53-to-7 strikeout-to-walk ratio - weren't too bad. Giles actually makes for a decent bounce-back candidate and potential draft-day value if your leaguemates are scared off by last year's 4.65 ERA.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
Allen had accrued a sub-3.00 ERA and K/9 above 11.0 in four straight seasons before his ERA ballooned to 4.75 with 80 strikeouts in 67 frames (10.75 K/9) last season. A massive 50.6% fly-ball rate led to a career-high 11 home runs surrendered. Here's the good news: He still found a ninth-inning gig with the Angels. The gopheritis and alarming walk increase (4.42 BB/9) make him a ratio risk, but Allen offers a rare source of affordable saves.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
After holding down Houston's closing gig in 2017, Giles garnered a 3.08 FIP and 7.57 K/BB rate in 2018. He also posted a 4.65 ERA and got shipped to Toronto after losing the ninth-inning gig. It's the second time in three years his ERA has soared over 4.00 despite excellent peripherals, so drafters can never get too comfortable with the erratic righty. There's still a lot to like. His strikeouts dropped despite an elite 16.0% swinging-strike rate, and he closed the season with 10 scoreless outings as the Blue Jays' closer, a role he'll hold to start the season. He's not far off from the guy who recorded a 2.30 ERA, 11.9 K/9, and 34 saves in 2017.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
Allen's last year in Cleveland turned out to be his worst, but that didn't stop the Angels from signing him as their new ninth-inning man. Allen's strikeout rate fell of a bit last season, but the bigger concerns were his ballooning walk rate, declining velocity, and the high amount of hard contact allowed. Allen has plenty of job security and should be a serviceable closer on an above-average team, but it would be unwise to expect a return to a sub-3.00 ERA, sub-1.20 WHIP, or 12+ K/9. He's a mid-tier closing option for 2019.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
Giles may have been an elite closer in 2015 and 2017, but his other two seasons have been disappointing for fantasy owners. Although he straightened is out with Toronto in his final 20 innings, we were still looking at a low K-rate and an ERA over 4.00. Plus, it isn't like there will be a ton of save opportunities in Toronto like he saw in Houston the past few years.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
It seemed as though Ty Buttrey, Bedrosian and Anderson were going to compete for saves in LA, but then they signed Allen who figures to get the job. Don't be surprised if he losses the gig early, however, if he struggles like we saw last season. Don't consider him a lock for 25 saves again.
