Notes
Fantasy managers rejoiced when Maeda was traded from the Dodgers to the Twins, but he surpassed even the loftiest of expectations. In the short season, Maeda went 6-1 with a 2.70 ERA, a 0.73 WHIP, and a 32.3% strikeout rate. In addition to simply being let loose with his innings, Maeda made a tangible change to his pitch mix, throwing far fewer fastball and more sliders and changeups (though his fastball was as effective as it had ever been last year, too). Maeda surely won't be able to repeat his numbers from 2020, as he allowed just a .208 BABIP, had an 80.2% LOB rate, and benefited from being able to feast on solely the NL and AL Central lineups. But even with some regression, he should still be a rock solid SP2, and should be drafted as such.
Dan Harris - FantasyPros
You have to hand it to the Brewers - they produce relievers who put up historically great seasons. Williams wasn't just good in 2020 - he was truly beyond belief. A 0.33 ERA. One run and eight hits allowed in 27 innings. A 44% K-BB%. Williams has battled injuries for much of his career, but given what he did last year, he should be drafted among the elite fantasy relievers in the game. Even if he never gets a save chance with Josh Hader in front of him, his ratios make him more than worth it.
Dan Harris - FantasyPros
In 2020 Maeda joined Jacob deGrom and Shane Bieber as the only three starters to finish top-five in both xFIP and xERA. It was a dominant campaign as his new team, the Twins, finally unleashed him in a way the Dodgers never did. Maeda also finished top-five in swinging strike rate last summer. He admittedly faced the easiest "hub" against AL/NL Central foes, but a large number of his 2021 starts will come against similar opponents. There's still profit to be had with his current ADP.
Brendan Tuma - FantasyPros
In the shortened 2020 season, Williams became the first reliever to ever win Rookie of the Year without earning a single save. This was a credit to his four wins, nine holds, 0.33 ERA, and 53 strikeouts in 27 innings pitched. Williams is once again unlikely to earn many saves in 2021, but his ratios are so elite that he's worth rostering in any and all fantasy leagues. To put in perspective how dominant Williams' changeup is - the spin rate on his changeup led the No. 2 finisher by more than 400 RPM, which was a bigger gap than No. 2 to No. 69. Should anything happen to Josh Hader, Williams would arguably become my top ranked closer in fantasy baseball.
Brendan Tuma - FantasyPros
Devin Williams was incredible in 2020 and ended up taking home the NL Rookie Year of the Year award. He owned a 0.33 ERA, 0.63 WHIP and a 53:9 K:BB across 27 innings last season. Williams will be one of the more popular relievers off the board for upcoming fantasy drafts, especially in league formats which use the category solds (save and holds). The Brewers reportedly were looking to move on from current closer Josh Hader. Williams would have the closer job all to himself and can be considered a top-5 reliever if Hader is dealt.
