Notes
Yates took over as the Padres' closer following the Brad Hand trade last July, and the team didn't skip a beat. Yates finished with an impressive 2.14 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, and 12.86 K/9, so he should return as the unquestioned 2019 closer barring a surprise acquisition. Yates' fantasy value also gets a bit of a boost from the Padres signing Manny Machado, as it decreases the likelihood of Yates getting dealt to a contender at the trade deadline.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
Leclerc emerged from relative obscurity in 2018 to become a dominant closer, producing a 1.56 ERA, 0.85 WHIP, and 13.27 K/9. That performance clearly impressed manager Chris Woodward, who has left no doubt that Leclerc will be the Rangers' closer again in 2019. He could be one of the better fantasy closers in the league even if Texas doesn't win a ton of games.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
The Padres kept their assembly line of elite relievers running when Brad Hand's midseason trade propelled Yates into the ninth inning. Hardly a downgrade, he posted a 2.14 ERA and 0.92 WHIP with the sixth-highest K-BB% (29.2) of all qualified relievers. He could follow Hand's path out of San Diego, but there's no guarantee he'd settle for a setup role elsewhere. At least a safe bet to keep the job with an exceptional strikeout tally while still on the team, drafters should pick him now and worry about a potential deal later.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
Essentially the Blake Snell of relievers down the stretch, Leclerc allowed just nine hits and two runs-both on July 28-over his final 28 innings. If going two entire months without allowing a run wasn't impressive enough, he yielded one extra-base hit (a double) while stockpiling 29 strikeouts and six walks in his final 20 frames. The Rangers have accordingly committed to the 25-year-old as their Opening Day closer. If he can sustain last season's late command improvements, he could keep the role all year as a top-five stud with 100-strikeout capabilities. A career 16.0% walk rate and a lackluster Rangers squad present some significant pitfalls, but the sky-high upside makes him an alluring second-tier breakout option.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
The Padres aren't expected to compete with the Dodgers or even Rockies for the division, but San Diego plays in enough low scoring close games that their closers tend to rack up the saves. This year should be no different for their new closer, who just so happened to be one of the best setup men in baseball before Brad Hand left the closer job open. Yates should find his way to 80+ Ks to go with amazing ratios once again.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
Don't look now, but Leclerc may already be the most dominant reliever in baseball. His ERA last year was 1.56 with a 0.850 WHIP and 13.3 K/9. The saves could triple to 35+ this season so don't hesitate to reach a few rounds to secure a stud on draft day.
