Notes
There's a reason that you hear fantasy analysts say that you should target post-hype players: baseball is hard, man, and it takes time for players to fully figure it out. With his prospect pedigree, it took longer than most thought for Lucas Giolito to figure things out. But boy did he ever in 2019, with his 25-start dominating stretch to end the season. He looked like a totally different pitcher - but one who mowed down the league. Hitters are more often to click sooner than pitchers are in the big leagues, and if you look at his peripherals, there's not much to question about Giolito's breakout performance. As long as he keeps his increased velocity on his fastball, he'll continue to be a solid SP2 for fantasy managers.
Michael Waterloo - FantasyPros
Is Jose Berrios overrated a little bit every year? Yeah, definitely. Berrios can be inconsistent from start to start, and you want more when you watch him pitch and he's on. That said, while he may not be an ace, he's one hell of an SP2 to have on your roster. You want guys who are going to give you 200 innings and a good strikeout rate. Berrios checks those boxes, even with the occasional bad start.
Michael Waterloo - FantasyPros
Giolito earned every bit of his breakout season, putting up an ERA that we nearly identical to his FIP and xFIP and a major gain in control. Most impressive for Giolito was his ability to limit contact on pitches in the strike zone - just 77.3%, second best in MLB behind Gerrit Cole. His raw stuff is elite, and another fantastic season should follow in 2020.
Dan Harris - FantasyPros
Berrios reached 200 innings but didn't really take the step forward that most fantasy owners had hoped for. His strikeout rate dropped, his WHIP increased, and batters made better contact. Still, Berrios was a pitcher who fantasy owners could start each and every time out, contributed well in wins, and rarely walked batters. When you add it all up, Berrios remains a starter that fantasy owners should covet, but perhaps temper expectations until he shows that he's ready to take that next step.
Dan Harris - FantasyPros
