Notes
Muncy was 2nd in HR-rate among all MLB hitters last season. Granted, he slowed down toward the end of the year and his batting average wasn't ideal, but that type of power certainly warrants a top 100 pick. This is especially the case when he qualifies at second base and third base too.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
Hosmer was a wreck in the second half, posting a negative average launch angle. While that is no guarantee to be fixed, he is still a career .280 hitter with excellent durability and sufficient power. Eventually every player becomes a value and Hosmer's ADP may have fallen enough that it has become the case.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
Muncy was a late bloomer, bouncing around the Athletics' and Dodgers' farm systems for six years before breaking out in a big way at 27 years old. In his first extended opportunity in the Big Leagues, Muncy smacked 35 home runs in just 395 at-bats. That was due in part to a 29.4 percent HR/FB ratio that was one of the highest in baseball, but Muncy was also among the league leaders in hard contact rate. Even if his HR/FB rate drops off, he can make up for it with more games played, making him a decent bet to again top 30 home runs. He won't be an asset in batting average or stolen bases, but he is another example of a big-time power source you can acquire relatively cheaply.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
After posting back-to-back 25 HR seasons, Hosmer managed just 18 long balls in his first season in San Diego and does not appear likely to return to the 25 homer range if he continues to hit the ball on the ground so frequently. That said, last year's .253 batting average seems due for some major improvement, both because his BABIP was a tad low and because last season's high strikeout rate looks like an outlier for a player that is still in the prime of his career. Hosmer could again be a sneaky source of steals on a team that likes to run, and his run and RBI production should improve along with the Padres' lineup as a whole. He won't blow you away with his production in any one category, but should make steady across-the-board contributions.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
Muncy had batted .195 with five homers in 245 big league plate appearances prior to 2018, so he naturally towered 35 homers with a .407 wOBA. He endured some troubling strikeout woes late in the season and playoffs, but there are plenty of reasons not to anticipate the bottom falling out entirely. Along with a gorgeous 16.4% walk rate, the late bloomer notched a heavy dosage of fly balls (44.9%, only 5.9% popups) and hard hits (47.4%). Per Statcast, only Joey Gallo served up a higher rate of barrels per batted balls than Muncy's 16.9. He's a solid power pick-and tremendous OBP target-if the rest of the room sees an obvious regression candidate.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
The every-other-year curse once again struck Hosmer, who batted .253/.322/.398 with a 95 wRC+ and -0.1 fWAR to start an eight-year, $144 million contract with the Padres. He was the only qualified position player to post a negative launch angle (-1.2°), and only Ian Desmond hit more ground balls than his 60.4%. Not only did he make weaker contact, he made less of it with career lows in contact (74.7%) and strikeout (21.0%) rate. Before writing Hosmer off entirely, he has bounced back from terrible years before. Deep-league managers will at least derive value from a locked-in starter who has recorded at least 667 plate appearances in each of the last four seasons. If he falls far enough, he is an acceptable corner-infield compiler, especially now that he's batting alongside Manny Machado. Take a better hitter-it won't be hard to find one-in shallower formats.
