Notes
It may be tempting to snag Betts with the 1st pick over Trout, after the ridiculous season he just put together, but remember that he is just one year removed from batting .264 with 24 homers. There is a chance Betts outproduces Trout, but that isn't a risk you should gamble on.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
Drafters know what they're getting in Arenado, who has batted no lower than .287 with at least 37 homers and 110 RBI in the last four years. He has played all but 16 games in those four seasons, making him a durable beacon of consistency worthy of a first-round selection. He signed an extension during the offseason, so investors no longer need to worry about a midseason trade removing him from Coors Field. A lack of steals is an unfortunate, but acceptable tradeoff for locking in bankable production at every other category.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
While Mike Trout is the consensus number one pick in fantasy drafts, Betts is a pretty nice consolation prize. Coming off a "down" 2017 season in which he hit just .268 but still went 20-20 and topped 100 runs and RBIs, Betts took his performance to another level in 2018, going 30-30 while hitting .346. Betts' .368 BABIP was a bit fortunate (making up for his .268 BABIP in 2017), but his true skill is that of a consistent .300 hitter. He also drew more walks and hit the ball with more authority than ever before. Betts was the number one player in standard 5x5 formats last season, and it wouldn't be the least bit surprising if he did it again.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
Arenado might not feel like the sexiest pick at this stage because he isn't the hot new name, nor is he a five-category star, but there is nothing wrong with boring old reliability. He has averaged 40 homers, 125 RBIs and 100 runs while batting .297 over the last four seasons. Don't let him slip past this 5th pick in your drafts.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
Following a down 2017, Betts became the first player since 2012 (Mike Trout and Ryan Braun) to hit .300 with 30 home runs and steals apiece. The career .303/.370/.518 hitter is averaging 29 homers, 27 steals, 117 runs, and 98 RBI over the past three years, upping his walk and hard-hit rates each step of the way. While last season's .346/.438/.640 slash line will be borderline impossible to fully sustain, a .430 wOBA (tied with Trout for MLB's lead) indicates limited regression. He's a five-category phenom who should lock down the second spot behind Trout in all formats.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
When it comes to elite production that you can bank on year in and year out, look no further than Arenado. Some people will quibble that his lack of steals makes him a four-category player, but that hasn't stopped Arenado from producing four straight seasons as a top-10 overall hitter in standard 5x5 leagues. The only other knock on Arenado is that he is much better in the thin air of Coors Field, but fresh off a record-breaking contract extension, fantasy owners no longer need to worry about the possibility of a mid-season trade out of Colorado. You can write it down in marker that he will provide around 40 home runs, 100 runs, 110 RBIs, and a batting average in the .290 range, making Arenado a nice bargain at his average draft position (ADP) of 6.8.
