Notes
Luis Castillo in 2020 is similar to Jose Berrios in 2019. He's ranked as if he took that next step into ace territory. The thought was off for Berrios, but it's spot-on for Castillo. While it's better to look at a full season's worth of stats compared to splitting it up to get a full view of the performance, it's the stretches of dominance that Castillo showed in his first 20 starts that has people so excited about him in 2020. With elite strikeout numbers and an improved GB rate, Castillo could give you a second top-10 pitcher on your staff if you take him here.
Michael Waterloo - FantasyPros
Nelson Cruz falls in every draft, in every year, for the past four to five years. It's because he's ancient in baseball years, and only David Ortiz remains undefeated against Father Time. It also hurts that Cruz is DH only, but production is production. If you're looking at Yordan Alvarez in the first few rounds of the draft, you'd be better suited to wait a few rounds and take Cruz for as good - if not better - production. That is, assuming this isn't year where it all falls apart.
Michael Waterloo - FantasyPros
Regression just never really hit for Castillo last year, despite a walk rate of 10.1%, fourth-worst in the league among qualified pitchers. There's no doubting Castillo's stuff, particularly his devastating changeup, and the Reds should be more competitive than they have been in years. But he simply has to cut down on the free passes if he wants to build on his breakout 2019. There's every reason to think he will as he continue to grow as a pitcher, and should make a reliable second fantasy starter.
Dan Harris - FantasyPros
If you removed Cruz's age from the equation, he'd be a top pick in fantasy. Despite missing nearly a quarter of the season to injury last year, he again put up elite numbers, topping 40 home runs and 100 RBI while batting .311. Cruz will be 40 this year, never plays the field and is starting to miss more time to injuries. But he's essentially forgotten in most drafts and has shown very little skills decline. Don't shy away from him on draft day even though he clogs your utility spot.
Dan Harris - FantasyPros
Struggled down the stretch but looked like one of the best pitchers in baseball to begin the year
Brendan Tuma - BettingPros
Hit .311 with 41 homers last year. Entering age-39 season
