Notes 
 Pivetta's peripherals say that his ERA should have been much better than 4.77 last year, but he was victimized by a high BABIP, low strand rate, and lots and lots of home runs. This is an elite bat misser who has thrown fewer than 300 innings at the Major League level, so there is some breakout potential here. We'll learn this season whether Pivetta is ready to take a step forward or if he's the next in a line of pitchers who don't quite live up to their peripherals.

The Blue Jays took on Ken Giles in the Osuna trade last year. Although Giles' 2018 stats don't look pretty at first glance, his underlying numbers - including a terrific 53-to-7 strikeout-to-walk ratio - weren't too bad. Giles actually makes for a decent bounce-back candidate and potential draft-day value if your leaguemates are scared off by last year's 4.65 ERA.

 Most metrics paint Pivetta as the perfect breakout pick. On the strength of a stellar 19.7 K-BB%, he posted a 3.80 FIP and 3.51 SIERA despite a bloated 4.77 ERA. He possesses an excellent curveball and slider combination that each induced swinging-strike rates above 15.0%. Before going all in on a Cy Young Award dark horse, beware an abysmal fastball that surrendered a .302/.385/.516 slash line. His ups and downs also weren't predictable, as he went from silencing the Red Sox to getting stuffed by the Mets in consecutive August outings. There's enough upside to draft him as a top-40 hurler. Just don't assume he's a sure thing to slice his ERA by at least a full run.

After holding down Houston's closing gig in 2017, Giles garnered a 3.08 FIP and 7.57 K/BB rate in 2018. He also posted a 4.65 ERA and got shipped to Toronto after losing the ninth-inning gig. It's the second time in three years his ERA has soared over 4.00 despite excellent peripherals, so drafters can never get too comfortable with the erratic righty. There's still a lot to like. His strikeouts dropped despite an elite 16.0% swinging-strike rate, and he closed the season with 10 scoreless outings as the Blue Jays' closer, a role he'll hold to start the season. He's not far off from the guy who recorded a 2.30 ERA, 11.9 K/9, and 34 saves in 2017.

  Giles may have been an elite closer in 2015 and 2017, but his other two seasons have been disappointing for fantasy owners. Although he straightened is out with Toronto in his final 20 innings, we were still looking at a low K-rate and an ERA over 4.00. Plus, it isn't like there will be a ton of save opportunities in Toronto like he saw in Houston the past few years.
