Notes
Few people could have foreseen the impact Mondesi would make down the stretch last season, finishing as a top-five overall hitter in standard roto/categories leagues from August 1 on. His plate discipline left a lot to be desired, but his 14 HRs and 32 SBs in 75 games led a lot of fantasy managers to the championship circle. If you believe most of the projection systems, he's due for a 20-40 kind of season in 2019, production that would again place him right alongside the very best roto options in the game. His limited track record makes him a risk-reward pick, but his skills are very real and his current sixth-round draft cost is very reasonable.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
Albies got off to a torrid start in his first full season in the Big Leagues, hitting nine home runs in April and heading into the All Star break with 20 HRs and nine steals. He struggled mightily in the second half of the season, but still finished as a top-three second basemen in standard 5x5 formats. There are some concerns that the Braves' acquisition of Josh Donaldson could push Albies down towards the bottom half of the lineup, hurting his counting stats and ability to steal bases, but it's also possible he'll stick in one of the first two lineup spots. Regardless, Albies has already proven he has 20-20 potential and should even be able to improve a bit on last season's .261 batting average.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
Fantasy managers can't scroll though Twitter or go grocery shopping without encountering a heated debate about Mondesi. Infatuated by his 11 homers, 27 steals, and .353 wOBA in 54 unbelievable second-half games, some supporters are happy to jump as early as the fourth round to draft a potential first-round contributor. Yet some experts, not buying the small sample and dubious of his poor plate approach, have the 23-year-old middle infielder outside of the top 100 altogether. There's 25-50 upside, but there's a legitimate possibility someone with a career .273 OBP gets benched (or even demoted) by June. It's one thing to hope for a 15-35 campaign with a passable batting average, which would certainly play in roto formats, but don't extrapolate three unsustainably awesome months into a full season of mouth-watering stats.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
Anyone who drafted Albies was already miles into a victory lap by the time his performance plummeted. After already validating an investment with 20 homers and nine steals in the first half, he hit a gruesome .226/.282/.342 with four homers and five steals after the All-Star break. His hard-hit rate dipped from 38.5 to 27.0%. He procured 16 homers in 1,744 minor league plate appearances, so drafters should be dubious of a full power repeat regardless of the steep splits. The bigger concern is whether he can fix his late contact woes, particularly his 39.6% outside-swing rate. If maintaining last year's .305 OBP, the Braves will eliminate any chance of another 105-run campaign by hitting their youngster sixth or seventh more often than first or second. There's too much upside to fade Albies entirely, but a top-50 pick is too rich.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
If you pro-rate Mondesi's 75 games to a full season, it comes out to 30 homers, 68 steals and 100 RBIs. I don't need to tell you that a season like that would put him above Mike Trout from a fantasy perspective. Granted, he is due for some regression, but don't hesitate to reach several rounds to get him on your roster.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
Albies is dripping with potential and there is no denying that after his 20 homer first half with 9 steals. With that said, his second half was dreadful, batting .226 with just 4 bombs. There is a chance he returns first round value, but the downside would torch your team if he returns to second half form.
