Notes
Catcher is so bad that prospect pedigree has kept Mejia in top-10 consideration despite batting .176 (12-for-69) in the majors. Even his Triple-A production dipped (.279/.328/.426) after getting traded from Cleveland to San Diego, where Austin Hedges is still clamoring for reps behind the plate. Contact and power upside still makes the 23-year-old Mejia a viable dart throw for anyone who missed out on the big names. Those in one-catcher leagues, however, should move on quickly if he's not playing much in April.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
Chirinos likely won't get 450 at-bats like some of the other names above him, but he is the starter for Houston which should come with it's share of runs and RBIs. The batting average clearly won't be ideal, but his 15 to 20 HR power off-sets that pain.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
Mejia hit .293 with 14 home runs over 110 games between the Indians' and Padres' AAA affiliates last season, a close approximation of his numbers for Cleveland's AA affiliate the year prior. Between 2017 and 2018, he's hit just .176 over his first 76 Major League plate appearances, but the contact skills he's displayed in the minors are exceedingly rare among Major League backstops. The bigger question is how often he'll play -- he will need to battle Austin Hedges for playing time behind the plate and may have trouble squeezing into the Padres' crowded outfield rotation. Despite the uncertainty, Mejia is a high-upside talent who is worth considering once the top eight starting catchers are off the board.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
Chirinos' 35 home runs over the last two seasons ranks eighth at the catcher position, and it has translated to back-to-back seasons in which Chirinos has finished as a top-12 fantasy catcher in 5x5 roto leagues, including a top-seven finish last year. He's expected to serve as the Astros' starting catcher after signing a one-year deal in the offseason, and while he'll likely bat at the bottom of the order, Chirinos should benefit from a good hitting environment and a lineup that is strong from top to bottom. He's likely to be a drain on batting average considering his high strikeout rate, but the pop is legit. Look his way if you're hunting for a sleeper at the position.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
Much of Mejia's production will depend on where he plays this season. The Padres are among the front-runners to land J.T. Realmuto, which oddly enough, would help Mejia a great deal. As it is now, the catching prospect is stuck behind Austin Hedges, who is among the top defensive catchers in baseball, but a trade to Miami, or perhaps even Cleveland or Cincinnati, would make him a fringe top 12 fantasy catcher right away. Mejia has more pop than your average catcher already and could eventually hit around .290 as his approach matures.
