Notes
In a category-based leagues, don't overthink it - even in a shortened season. You're taking Acuña first overall. The only concern is the high strikeout rate, but you can still bank on a .285 average with 15 homers and nearly 15 steals in the shortened season. He's going to hold down the top spot for years to come.
Michael Waterloo - FantasyPros
Having Trout third feels weird, but there are concerns with his wife's due date in August for how much time Trout will miss. Even, on the low end, 45 games of Trout is better than the vast majority of the league. He could miss more time than anticipated, or not miss much at all. It's worth baking in the risk here, but moving him lower than third overall as the safest player to return value in the first round, is a mistake.
Michael Waterloo - FantasyPros
We knew Acuna would develop into an elite fantasy option one day, but few saw it happening this quickly. He combined power (41 homers), speed (37 stolen bases), and his spot batting atop an outstanding lineup (127 runs, 101 RBI) to put up one of the all-around great seasons. He'll stick in the leadoff spot this year, which should ensure that he continues to run early and often, and there's little reason to expect his numbers to dip much from last year. In points leagues, where his strikeout rate is a bit of a negative, his stock falls just a tad, but otherwise, no one would fault you if you made him the top pick in the draft.
Dan Harris - FantasyPros
Trout may not be the clear-cut number one player in fantasy this year, but that's of no fault of his own, as he's coming off one of his best seasons ever, with a career-high 45 home runs in just 134 games. If you were desperate to find a knock on Trout, it's that he hasn't topped 140 games in any of his last three seasons, and his 11 stolen bases last year tied his low in a single season. But that's all window dressing on a truly special player who is obviously a top-three pick at worst.
Dan Harris - FantasyPros
Acuna went 41/37 in homers/steals last season as a sophomore but the batting average is likely going to be 20-30 points below Trout and the homers may end up 10 behind. Most are taking Acuna first anyways because of the difference in steals and frankly, you can't go wrong with either.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
Although Mike Trout has missed some time, they've mostly been flukey injuries. Had he stayed healthy, we may have been talking about 55 homers with 15 steals and a .300 average. His consistency alone makes him the number one overall pick just ahead of Acuna.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
I wrote in 2019 that Acuna was being under drafted. This season I am seeing regression (in stolen bases specifically) that won't much matter to his overall ADP with one exception, he is my #2 rather than first overall, even though he has more potential to be the best statistical performer in 2020. Draft him 1.1 if you want, but Trout is the safer top pick. Can't go wrong with either choice.
Chris Mitchell - FantasyData
Potential verse reliability is the question here. Acuna and Trout are likely to have comparable home run totals while Acuna should steal more bases. We know what we're getting fromTrout and with Rendon in the lineup, maybe 2020 is a career year. It wouldn't surprise me to see Acuna have the better statistical 2020, but Trout's reliability gets my pick at #1.1.
