Entrenched in a heated battle for Colorado's second-base gig, Hampson has teased immense fantasy upside with three homers and five steals in his first 13 spring games. The career .315/.389/.457 minor league hitter has swiped 125 bases in three professional seasons, so he could be a major difference-maker if given the opportunity to start regularly while calling Coors Field home. Drafters still must be careful, as Ryan McMahon and Pat Valakia are also making compelling cases for playing time this spring. Hampson, however, would help fantasy investors the most, and thus warrants a late-round gamble.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
Gennett will miss two to three months to start 2019 after spraining his groin at the end of spring training. Those who drafted the second baseman who stash him beyond the shallowest of mixed leagues, as he was one of eight players to bat at least .300 with 50 homers through the past two seasons. Yet the Statcast data remains skeptical. No hitter with a least 350 plate appearances had a wider gap between wOBA (.362) and xwOBA (.311) in 2018.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
The Rockies' likely starter at second base on Opening Day, Hampson has managed at least 35 SBs with a .300 batting average in each of his three minor league seasons to date. He likely won't be good for more than around 10 HRs over a full season, but that hardly matters if he is piling up hits and stolen bases while playing half his games in Coors Field. He's a very enticing sleeper, especially in roto/categories leagues.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
Over the last two years, Gennett has compiled 50 homers, 190 RBIs and a .300 batting average. He may not be the most physically imposing ballplayer, but that is too large of a sample size to be a fluke. Don't hesitate to take advantage of the industry's lack of excitement over him.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
The signing of Daniel Murphy should cause Hampson's ECR to drop another 50 spots, as that transaction shifts Ryan McMahon over to second base. Hampson could force the Rockies hands with a strong Spring, but more than likely, he won't get the call until someone hits the DL. At that point, McMahon could slide over to first, third or the outfield. If it is Story that goes down, Hampson would fill the gap. He could eventually be a better version of D.J. LeMahieu offensively, posting a batting average near .300 with more power and speed. Right away, he will merely hold his own in the batting average department while contributing nearly 30 steals per 162 games.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
Gennett experienced a major breakout in his first season with the Reds in 2017, and his 2018 encore was just about as good. Last season's .310 batting average was fueled by a .358 BABIP that is due for a bit of a correction, but he should still be able to hit at least .280 or so. Meanwhile, his home run output should hold steady in the mid-20s while his already-strong run and RBI production could see a slight boost from an improved supporting cast.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
