Rinse. Wash. Repeat. Every draft season, we as a collective fantasy community get excited about drafting Starling Marte on our teams. When the season is over, we end up feeling pretty meh about it. Rinse. Wash. Repeat. He's in a new ballpark with a better team, sure, but let's not forget that he's 31 years old, and with speed as his main value driver, we can expect that to start to decline rapidly, potentially this season. What's more, Marte has only had two seasons with more than 600 plate appearances in his career despite being a regular presence toward the top of the Pittsburgh lineup.
Michael Waterloo - FantasyPros
With second base being as weak as it is, it's kind of shocking that Ketel Marte is going this low in drafts. Sure, the breakout was out of nowhere - despite being a popular breakout pick for three years in a row - but he actually was stronger down the stretch than he was in the first half, and there are very few concerns with his underlying numbers. A change to the baseball could see his home runs come down, but not enough so that he won't return draft-day value.
Michael Waterloo - FantasyPros
Marte set career-highs in home runs, runs scored, RBI, and slugging percentage in 2019, and now gets an upgrade in supporting cast and home park with the move to the Diamondbacks. The Pirates ranked 20th in 2019 in runs scored, while the Diamondbacks ranked 11th, and PNC Park was one of the worst parks for righty batters last season. Marte may not be able to grow his 2019 numbers at this point given his age, but his change in teams certainly doesn't hurt.
Dan Harris - FantasyPros
Marte suddenly went from being a career .263 hitter with 22 home runs in 1,548 plate appearances to batting .329 with 32 home runs in 628 plate appearances. And while he made many overall gains, such as a massive increase in launch angle, his expected batting average was just .299 and that .030 difference was 10th-highest in MLB. He also upped his pull percentage by a significant amount, and pulled all but one of his home runs, which should be something that pitchers can exploit in 2020. Buy some of the gains, but consider Marte closer to a .290-25 type of hitter.
Dan Harris - FantasyPros
By now, you should know that although Marte isn't one of the game's most well known stars, he is a solid bet to return 25 homers, 100 runs scored and 30 steals with a strong batting average if he can stay healthy fo the full season. He doesn't have much upside for the third round ADP, though.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
There is no one who will deny the likelihood that Marte's .329 batting average drops this year but we are still talking about a kid who hit 32 homers with 10 steals last year. As we've seen with Jose Ramirez and J.D. Martinez, these breakout stars can sometimes even further improve.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
I am a huge 5-tool chasing type of guy and with a move to Arizona, I want shares of Marte to see if he can be a 30/30/.285 "Dude" in 2020. 20/20 feels like a lock, 25/25 is a reasonable hope while 30/30 is a reach worth dreaming on.
Chris Mitchell - FantasyData
In the Era of the Juiced ball (and I am sure some juiced bodies too) I am not buying Marte's 2019 power surge and he doesn't run as much as you might think he does. I am not paying for 30 home runs and 10 stolen bases when regression suggests 15-20 HRs and five SBs. Marte won't fall this far and I am fine with that. I will be owning ZERO shares of the 2019 shocker of the year in Fantasy baseball.
Chris Mitchell - FantasyData
Set a career high in homers last season in what was likely the best overall season of his career. The HRs may get knocked down under 20 again if the ball changes, but should be a solid contributor everywhere. Not a big fan of reaching for him at all, because his ceiling is not like others in the early rounds. Safe pick.
Michael Petropoulos - BRoto Fantasy
Marte earned every bit of his 32 HRs last year. His average is almost certain to come down a bit, but his breakout was real, and similar numbers are certainly not out of reach. He is being discounted out of fear for massive regression. I am happy to take the discount.
