Notes
There is a lot of appeal in drafting an upside pitcher like Strasburg, but keep in mind that he averages just 145 innings over the last four years. Even with an excellent strikeout rate, that comes to just 174 Ks per season. The ratios will likely be golden again, but know that there is plenty of risk in spending a 5th or 6th round pick on him this year
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
Flaherty was absurdly good last season as a rookie and seemed to improve as the year went on, striking out 95 in 76 second half innings. With that said, his walk rate climbed to a dangerous 3.52 per nine innings by seasons end. He has the upside to strike out 240 batters, but there is some risk here as well
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
Strasburg's ERA (3.74) and WHIP (1.20) were a little inflated last season, but that can probably be chalked about to statistical noise -- his peripherals were not meaningfully different outside of a spike in his home runs allowed. The bigger concern is a familiar one: durability/health. Strasburg has not pitched more than 175 innings in a season since 2014, and expecting more than 150-175 from him this season would be foolish. That doesn't mean he can't be a top-20 or even top-15 fantasy starter, though.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
Flaherty's first full Major League season was an excellent one, as his 3.34 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and 10.85 K/9 rate demonstrate. But his 3.52 walks per nine were high, and he averaged fewer than six innings per start, limiting his win potential. He also benefited from a .257 BABIP allowed that was low, even for a pitcher with great stuff like Flaherty. If more of those batted balls fall in for base hits, Flaherty may pay a greater price for the free passes this year. His long-term outlook is bright, but there could be some bumps along the way.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
It's bad enough Strasburg, still yet to make 30 starts since 2014, threw just 130 innings in 2018. He also recorded the worst ERA (3.74) and FIP (3.62) of his career. Rises in hard-hit rate and exit velocity are concerning, but an elevated 15.7 HR/FB% ultimately did him in. Even if he bounces back to a 3.50 ERA or lower, investors can't reasonably bank on more than 150 innings, a mark he has met once in the last four seasons. Time is running out for the 30-year-old to reach his Cy Young ceiling.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
Flaherty's 3.34 ERA and 182 strikeouts in 151 rookie innings will justifiably make him a popular pick. Buoyed by a lethal slider and a curveball that didn't yield a single extra-base hit, there's easy 200-strikeout upside if he pitches a full season. Yet a 3.52 BB/9 and 57.2% first-pitch rate make the 23-year-old riskier than the typical SP2. He's best paired with a steady, reliable ace.
