Notes
There is a lot of appeal in drafting an upside pitcher like Strasburg, but keep in mind that he averages just 145 innings over the last four years. Even with an excellent strikeout rate, that comes to just 174 Ks per season. The ratios will likely be golden again, but know that there is plenty of risk in spending a 5th or 6th round pick on him this year
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
After dominating in a smaller 2017 sample size, Clevinger took it up another notch in 2018, this time with 200 innings of proof. He might not win 16 games or strikeout 240 batters like some of the top tier aces, but his ratios and 200 Ks put him firmly in the 6th-8th rounds of this season's drafts
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
Strasburg's ERA (3.74) and WHIP (1.20) were a little inflated last season, but that can probably be chalked about to statistical noise -- his peripherals were not meaningfully different outside of a spike in his home runs allowed. The bigger concern is a familiar one: durability/health. Strasburg has not pitched more than 175 innings in a season since 2014, and expecting more than 150-175 from him this season would be foolish. That doesn't mean he can't be a top-20 or even top-15 fantasy starter, though.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
Clevinger took the gains he made in 2017 and translated them to a full season as a starter i 2018. The one difference was that he trimmed his walk rate from nearly 4.5 per nine to barely 3.0 per nine, thereby dropping his WHIP all the way down to 1.16. Clevinger was particularly dominant in the second half, posting a 2.31 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, and 10.27 K/9 rate after the All Star break. The projection systems expect a little bit of regression due to his low BABIP allowed and left-on-base percentage, but it's also possible Clevinger can further improve on his strikeout rate and WHIP.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
It's bad enough Strasburg, still yet to make 30 starts since 2014, threw just 130 innings in 2018. He also recorded the worst ERA (3.74) and FIP (3.62) of his career. Rises in hard-hit rate and exit velocity are concerning, but an elevated 15.7 HR/FB% ultimately did him in. Even if he bounces back to a 3.50 ERA or lower, investors can't reasonably bank on more than 150 innings, a mark he has met once in the last four seasons. Time is running out for the 30-year-old to reach his Cy Young ceiling.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
Clevinger rose to the next level in the second half, posting a 2.31 ERA and 89 strikeouts in 78 innings. While he outperformed his overall 3.52 FIP and 3.86 SIERA with a 3.02 ERA, 2018 marked the second straight year he defied the peripherals. A high infield-fly rate (11.2%) and low barrel rate (5.8%) led him to a .280 xwOBA, so don't expect severe regression from the borderline top-20 starter.
