Notes
Valdez got his first extended look as a starter in 2020 and the results were very good. He is really a two-pitch pitcher, with a very solid sinker and curveball, but he is able to get away with his lack of a third pitch by getting batters to pound the ball into the ground (60% ground ball rate) and limiting free passes, at least last year (5.6% walk rate). But without a third pitch, it seems unlikely that he can maintain the 26.4% strikeout rate he put up 70 2/3 innings last year. However, with a guaranteed rotation spot on a good team and nothing particularly fluky in his underlying metrics or statcast data, Valdez should be considered a viable SP3 for fantasy purposes, even if he seems unlikely to quite repeat his 2020 season.
Dan Harris - FantasyPros
Rogers has been the reliever to roster in Minnesota for the past two seasons, but he's totaled just 39 saves over that span. Even with the shortened 2020 season, that's just not the total you want to see from a reliever if you're relying on him as an RP1, especially when the Twins as a team have totaled 92 saves over the last two years. Rogers's lack of saves is all about Rocco Baldelli's philosophy, rather than Rogers's lack of effectiveness (he's totaled a 2.80 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP, and a 10.8 K/9 over the last three years). Unfortunately, Baldelli is unlikely to abandon his committee approach with the additions of Alex Colome and Hansel Robles. Rogers is still a fine RP2, but certainly don't expect him to get every save chance in Minnesota.
Dan Harris - FantasyPros
Valdez isn't getting enough credit for basically saving Houston's season last summer. Following the loss of Gerrit Cole to free agency, the loss of Justin Verlander to Tommy John surgery, and the loss of Zack Greinke's effectiveness, Valdez stepped up in a big way. He both increased his strikeout rate and lowered his walk rate to produce a career-best season. Unfortunately, this also came with a less-than-ideal hard-hit rate. Living in the zone more often led to batters doing more damage with Valdez's offerings. This was also combatted by his increased sinker usage, which led to many of these batted balls going directly into the ground. His breakout looks real, and I'm investing accordingly.
