Notes
Fool me once, right? Those who invested heavily in Whit Merrifield in 2019 were disappointed, as he failed to replicate the stolen base numbers that he gave you in 2018. He's a non-zero in power, but unless the steals return to 40-plus, which is unlikely for a 31-year-old, he's going to fail to give you the production that you want. There are better options at both second base and outfield that you can comfortably pass on Merrifield for.
Michael Waterloo - FantasyPros
All it takes for Eddie Rosario to be a better fantasy player is for him to learn how to take a walk. He now has three seasons out of five with a walk rate of 3.7 or lower. If he could get that up to 8 percent, you're looking at a top 45 pick. As it is, he's a guy who is going to help you in home runs, RBIs, and be fine at batting average. That player is also known as nearly every other player in fantasy.
Michael Waterloo - FantasyPros
Merrifield leads off the second tier of fantasy second basemen after Altuve, Torres and Albies. He won't hit 20 bombs, but we can expect a batting average near or above .300 plus 20-30 steals once again, making him a great fifth round pick.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
Even despite missing 25 games, Rosario still drove in 109 runs thanks to 32 homers. With a full season and his steady .280 batting average, drafting him at his eighth-round ADP is pure thievery. He won't steal any bags but there is certainly something to be said for his consistent bat.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
SOME power and above average speed makes me more bullish on Merrifield than the consensus. Stolen bases are becoming more and more rare, but the Royals were second in SB in 2019. That enhances Merrifields stature in my rankings as well.
Chris Mitchell - FantasyData
Perennially underrated. Grab him in the 8th, 9th or even 10th round and there is no way he ends up a losing investment.
Michael Petropoulos - BRoto Fantasy
His drop in SBs and SB success rate keeps him out of the top 5 2B for me this season. Safe pick at ADP as there is no real breakout potential.
Michael Petropoulos - BRoto Fantasy
A boring but safe fantasy option in a loaded lineup. 30 homers, 100 RBI, and a .280 average are fair expectations
Brendan Tuma - BettingPros
A safe source of batting average and steals at a thing second base position
