Notes
With the Royals not expected to compete in 2019, there is little doubt that Merrifield will surpass 40 stolen bases again. He doesn't have much in the way of power, nor will he score a load of runs in this offense, but the batting average should end up around .300 once again
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
Albies got off to a torrid start in his first full season in the Big Leagues, hitting nine home runs in April and heading into the All Star break with 20 HRs and nine steals. He struggled mightily in the second half of the season, but still finished as a top-three second basemen in standard 5x5 formats. There are some concerns that the Braves' acquisition of Josh Donaldson could push Albies down towards the bottom half of the lineup, hurting his counting stats and ability to steal bases, but it's also possible he'll stick in one of the first two lineup spots. Regardless, Albies has already proven he has 20-20 potential and should even be able to improve a bit on last season's .261 batting average.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
Merrifield followed up his breakout 2017 campaign with another excellent fantasy season in 2018, hitting .304 with 12 homers and a league-leading 45 stolen bases. Fantasy owners shouldn't expect him to hit .300 again -- his .352 BABIP was among the league's highest -- but he should settle in at around .280-.285 and again produce 10-15 HRs. His run and RBI totals may not be great in a weak-hitting Royals lineup, but you're really paying for the steals, and Merrifield should again have the green light on the base paths early and often for a team that will need to manufacture runs.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
Anyone who drafted Albies was already miles into a victory lap by the time his performance plummeted. After already validating an investment with 20 homers and nine steals in the first half, he hit a gruesome .226/.282/.342 with four homers and five steals after the All-Star break. His hard-hit rate dipped from 38.5 to 27.0%. He procured 16 homers in 1,744 minor league plate appearances, so drafters should be dubious of a full power repeat regardless of the steep splits. The bigger concern is whether he can fix his late contact woes, particularly his 39.6% outside-swing rate. If maintaining last year's .305 OBP, the Braves will eliminate any chance of another 105-run campaign by hitting their youngster sixth or seventh more often than first or second. There's too much upside to fade Albies entirely, but a top-50 pick is too rich.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
Do not draft as OF, use at 2B
Michael Florio - Fantrax
Albies is dripping with potential and there is no denying that after his 20 homer first half with 9 steals. With that said, his second half was dreadful, batting .226 with just 4 bombs. There is a chance he returns first round value, but the downside would torch your team if he returns to second half form.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
Merrifield not only absconded an MLB-high 45 steals but also batted .304 with 12 homers and 43 doubles. That's borderline extinct skill set justifies his spot as an upper-echelon pick, but beware some regression. His batting average rose despite modest drops in contact and strikeout rates, and no speedster should hold a 14.7% infield-fly rate. Still, there aren't many .280, 12-35 hitters either.
